CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern Buccaneers dropped their first game of the season at home to the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs at a score of 71-64. The loss drops CSU to an overall record of 10-12 (4-5, BSC). The win improves Gardner-Webb's record to 14-8 (6-3, BSC). Leading the Bucs was senior guard Katie Tull who had 24 points on the night.

The Bucs were shooting the ball well from deep in the first half. Tull had 15 of her 24 points in the first half, all of her makes and attempts came from beyond the arc. On the other side the Runnin' Bulldogs could not seem quite to find the range from deep going only 2-of-8 from three in the first half of play.

Ball pressure from the Buccaneers was forcing turnovers from their opposition. GWU committed 11 turnovers in the first half alone that translated into 15 points for Charleston Southern.

CSU was beginning to tire toward the end of the first half and GWU began to narrow the margin. After leading by as many as ten points the Buccaneers were ahead at a score of 29-25 at the half.

In the second half Gardner-Webb came out with a box and 1 defense in an effort to shut down the Big South Conference's leading scorer Tull. Her defender made an effort to deny her from getting the ball and had no defensive help side responsibility, essentially forcing the Bucs to play 4-on-4 on the offensive end.

Bucs would build their lead to as much as ten points in the second half, but the Bulldogs would come back with a 13-1 run to retake the lead with roughly ten minutes remaining in the game and would eventually build their lead to as many as nine points.

Charleston Southern would make a late push to bring the deficit down to three points, but that is as close as they would get to the lead. Gardner-Webb's size and depth proved too much to handle.

The Buccaneers had three players in double-figures on the night. Lakeitha Alston scored 17 and pulled down 8 boards. Wasmer scored 18 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Tull led the Buccaneers with 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field. Those three players accounted for 59 of the Buccaneer's 64 points (92%).

Leading all scorers was Monique Hudson who had a career high 25 points in tonight's contest. Her twin sister Dominique Hudson had 19 points for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

The Buccaneers will return to action next Saturday when they will travel to High Point, N.C. for yet another Big South matchup with the Panthers. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
