Alston's 31 Points Not Enough as Bucs Fall to Asheville, 75-68

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Lakeitha Alston tied her career high with 31 points and added in nine rebounds but it wasn't enough to overcome UNC Asheville as the Charleston Southern (10-5 , 3-1 Big South) women's basketball team fell to the Bulldogs 75-68 on Monday evening at Kimmel Arena in Asheville, N.C. The loss ends the Buccaneers' win streak at four games and is the first Big South Conference loss of the season.

Alston was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and had two of CSU's three blocks as well as two steals. She was one of three players in double figures for the Bucs, joining Rachelle Coward and Erin Bratcher, who each scored 10 points. Shay Jones tied for the team lead in rebounds with nine and also dished out a team-high six assists on the night.

The Bucs shot 41 percent from the field but tied a season low of 25.9 percent from beyond the arc, sinking just seven 3-pointers on the night. Alston had three of the treys.

Lindsey Thompson led the Bulldogs with 26 points, while Kelli Riles collected a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Asheville shot also shot 41 percent on the night and was 7-of-17 from beyond the arc for 41 percent.

The game was close from the tip, with neither team taking more than three-point lead throughout the first half. Bratcher's three-pointer with 42 seconds remaining in the half gave CSU a five-point lead, its largest of the night.

Asheville whittled the CSU lead down to one to start the second half, and the two teams tied things up nine times in the first ten minutes. It would remain a one possession game until the Bulldogs hit a 3-pointer with 3:30 to play. Though the Bucs came back to tie things up at 66-66 with a minute to play, Asheville hit the free-throw line six times to take the 75-68 victory.

Charleston Southern will return to the Buc Dome on Saturday when they face Radford in a Big South Conference match up. The game, which is the Bucs' annual Pack the House event, will tip off at 2 p.m.
