Daufuskie Island, S.C. - Charleston Southern junior Ross Thomson is tied for seventh and the Buccaneers are in ninth after 36 holes at the 2012 Rees Jones Invitational, played Monday on the Jones Signature Course at Haig Point Golf Club.
Thomson's afternoon 72 (E) anchored the Bucs' 301 in the second round as CSU climbed a spot to move five strokes ahead of Tennessee Tech and seven shots out of the top five. CSU (616) is two strokes back of Iowa State (614) and four behind UNC Wilmington (612) in the 14-team field.
The Bucs started slow after a 315 (+27) to start the day, but bounced back with the fourth lowest second round score (301) to give itself a chance to make a move in Tuesday's final round.
"As a team we got off to a disappointing start in the opening round," CSU head coach Mike Wilson said Monday evening. "Round two was more of the team effort that we were looking for as all four scores were in the 70's. We need to continue to improve on our course management and we will move up the leader board (Tuesday) if we do that."
Thomson is seventh and is five strokes back of Liberty's Ian McConnell, who leads the tournament at 2-under. Thomson shot a 75 (+3) in his first round Monday.
Sophomore Jarrett Swan fired a pair of 75s and is tied for 14th at 150. He's 8-over par for the event.
"I was proud of the way both Jarrett and Ross hung in there on a very challenging course," Wilson added.
Sophomore Choo Teck Ng shaved five strokes off of his 81 (+9) to start the day to shoot a 76 in the afternoon and is tied for 43rd. Nicolas Baena shot an 84 to start the day and finished with a 78. He is tied for 52nd at 18-over par.
Sophomore James Canaday is tied for 63rd after an 84 and an 89 in his two rounds.
Liberty also has the lead as a team. The Flames are 2-under par after a 574 on Monday. They lead host South Carolina by 17 strokes. The Gamecocks are at 591 through 36 holes. Winthrop University is three strokes back of USC for third.
Tuesday's final round begins at 8:30 a.m. on the Jones Signature Course.
