HIGH POINT, N.C. - Cheyenne Parker led the way for the host High
Point Panthers with a game-high 25 points as Charleston Southern
fell inside the Millis Center on Thursday night in Big South
action, 71-54.
Shay Jones scored a career-high 16 points and pulled down six
rebounds in the loss for CSU (5-6, 0-2 BSC) as the Lady Bucs
dropped the second conference game in the 2012-2013 season.
Freshman center Monique Maximilien recorded a career high 10
rebounds and three points in the loss, while Lakeitha Alston
continued moving up the scoring ranks in the Lady Bucs' record
books with 12 points in the loss to the Panthers.
Parker finished the game with 25 points, scoring 18 in the
second half and added eight rebounds, six steal and four blocked
shots as High Point (8-6, 2-1 BSC) won their second conference
game. Stacia Robertson added 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the
floor, while Kendra Wallace had nine points and six rebounds as the
Panthers shot 46.0 percent (29-of-63) from the floor in the
win.
Parker and Lindsay Puckett layups opened up the game for High
Point before CSU got on the board on a drive and layup by DJ Fowler
with 19:07 to play in the first half. Parker added a free throw and
Puckett connected on a three-pointer to improve to lead to 8-2 as
the Panthers held the early lead.
Charleston Southern rallied to cut the deficit down to two
points at 12-10 with 13:31 on the clock as Jones converted a pair
of free throws and Fowler drove in for the layup. Back-to-back
layups by Robertson and Jazmin Cromartie extended the lead back out
to six for the Panthers.
Robertson and Cromartie's baskets began a 19-0 run helped in
part by a pair of three-pointers by Kendra Wallace as the Panthers
held CSU without a score for a span of 6:18 in the first half as
High Point went up 31-10.
Jones ended the Lady Bucs scoreless streak with a pair of layups
at the 7:17 mark on the clock, but Jatzmin Johnson answered with a
jumper off the assist from Ashante Richard as the Panthers built
their largest lead of the half at 27 points as Wallace connected on
her third three-pointer in the first 20 minutes with 5:10 on the
clock to put High Point ahead 40-13.
Jones' layup on the following possession ended an 8:54 run in
which CSU did not score a made basket and Whitney Collins made the
second of two free throw attempts to start the Lady Bucs comeback
over the final five minutes of the half.
Following a Johnson jumper, the Lady Bucs began their comeback
from the free throw line, using a 12-0 run to close out the first
half. Erin Bratcher and Alston both hit from the charity stripe,
while Jones was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line in the half in
cutting the 26 point disadvantage down to a 14-point deficit.
Monique Maximilien added eight rebounds in the first half for
the Lady Bucs and connected on a short jumper in the paint off the
assist from Fowler and Fowler closed out the half with a driving
layup on the break to put the score at 42-28 as the teams headed
into the halftime break.
Jones continued the run into the early minutes of the second
half, connecting on a three-pointer in front of the Charleston
Southern bench before Parker ended the scoreless streak for the
Panthers with a layup with 18:56 to play to keep the High Point
lead in double-digits at 44-31. The teams traded points as Parker
scored six of HPU's first eight points of the half, while Bratcher
connected on a three-pointer from the left corner as the margin
stood at 50-36 with 15:55 remaining.
CSU continued to battle back in the game, bringing the scoring
margin within 12 following a running jump shot in the lane by
Zhaquondalee' Greer at the 10:57 mark to put the score at 57-45.
However, a layup by Parker and back-to-back baskets by Taylor
Tremblay kept the High Point lead in double-digits at 63-47 with
8:52 left in the game.
The Lady Bucs were unable to bring the game all the way back
from the early deficit as Parker scored 18 of her game-high 25
points in the second half as High Point recorded the 71-54 victory
inside the Millis Center.
Lakeitha Alston continued climbing the scoring ranks for the
Lady Buccaneers in the game, passing Kelsey Wasmer (2007-11, 1,177
points) after making a pair of free throws with 2:51 left in the
first half. Alston finished the game with 12 points and is
currently eighth in the all-time scoring ranks with 1,186 career
points in the blue and gold of CSU and sits one point behind
Yolanda Brown (1985-89, 1,187 points.
Jones led the Big South hitting 89.7 percent of her free throw
attempts in the 2012-2013 season and continued to have the hot hand
at the line, making all eight of her attempts from the line in the
loss.
DJ Fowler was also in double-digits in the loss for the Lady
Bucs, scoring 11 points and added five rebounds and three assists
in her sixth double-digit scoring game on the season.
Charleston Southern continues the 2012-2013 season on the road
as the Lady Buccaneers travel to Conway, S.C. on Saturday, January
5th, to take on Coastal Carolina University in a Big South
Conference game. Tipoff between the Lady Bucs and the Chanticleers
is set for 2 p.m. inside The HTC Center.
