MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Charleston Southern fired a team-310 in chilly, blustery conditions to finish in a tie for third at the 2013 Wendy's Invitational, which wrapped up on Tuesday afternoon at Rivertowne County Club.
CSU tied with Wofford at 920 to finish ahead of Tennessee Tech and Richmond. College of Charleston finished at 13-over par to win the event by 13 over defending Big South Champion, Coastal Carolina (+26).
"I would like to thank Mike Giunta and Wendy's for his continued support and sponsorship of this event," CSU Director of Golf Mike Wilson said following the final round. "We missed Mike out here this week and wish him a speedy recovery."
CofC's Laura Fuenfstueck took medalist honors with a 215 at the event following a final round 76 (+4). She won by three strokes over Coastal's Lena Schaeffner, who also shot 76 on Tuesday.
CSU's top two finishers were freshmen, while senior Torey Johnson finished strong with a pair of 74s to climb to 21st following a slow start. Freshman Shelby Thompson carded an 80 on Tuesday to finish 15th and Bella Johnson had a 77 (+3) to close in a tie for 18th. Torey Johnson had three birdies in the final round to lead the way.
"We had some good scores out there for the most part," CSU head coach Matt Cram-Smith said following Tuesday's round. "We still have plenty of room for improvement and are getting more consistent, but the conditions were tough and the girls all fought really hard and gave their all. Finishing tied for third behind CofC and Coastal is a respectable finish. We're definitely not looking at this event as one to be happy about with our result. I think the girls are all very aware of what it's going to take to get better and they're all determined to put in the effort."
CSU senior Vanessa Jay finished tied for 44th after a 79 on Tuesday, while sophomore Hannah Fairweather tied for 55th.
CSU returns to action Oct. 27-28 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate played at Turtle Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island.
