SAVANNAH STATE, Ga. - Charleston Southern struggled to control the ball in their Saturday evening matchup against Savannah State, falling on the road to the Tigers despite a second consecutive double-digit scoring effort by freshman forward Tatum Jarvis as the Buccaneers fell in Tiger Arena, 75-47.
Jarvis led CSU with 11 points in the game, following up her 16 point game this past Tuesday at home against Southern Wesleyan, to pace the Buccaneers offense as CSU shot 36.6 percent from the floor as a team and 73.9 percent from the free throw line in the loss.
The Buccaneers fall to 1-2 overall in the young 2013-14 season, while Savannah State improves to 2-0 with the second consecutive win to open up the season.
Jarvis went 5-for-9 from the floor and pulled down five rebounds for Charleston Southern as CSU struggled to move the ball around the perimeter in the contest, going 0-for-12 from behind the arc in the game. DJ Fowler, Alyssa Mann and Anicia Dotson all had eight points in the game, while Rochelle Brophy and Erin Bratcher had six points apiece for CSU on the evening.
Savannah State took control of the game from the outset, taking advantage of 28 CSU turnovers on 16 SSU steals in building an 8-0 lead, and the Tigers would not look back in the contest in the win. Ezinne Kalu led all players with 17 points on the night, while Kenyata Hendrix finished close behind with 16 of her own as Savannah State shot 40.8 percent from the floor and 40.9 percent from behind the arc in the win.
SSU took advantage of three early CSU turnovers in building an 8-0 lead less than three minutes into the game as Norman and Kalu drove in for layups, while Hendrix connected on an early three-pointer at the 17:29 mark. A Fowler layup put the first Buccaneers points on the scoreboard with 15:23 to play in the opening half, but the Savannah State lead reached double-digits on a Norman three-point play with 10:53 remaining in going up 17-6.
The SSU lead reached 20 points late in the first half as Kalu connected on a three-pointer off the assist by Hendrix, but Dotson closed out the half with a pair of layups as the Bucs went into the break trailing the Tigers 34-16.
Charleston Southern mounted a comeback attempt late in the second half as Fowler and Bratcher both drained a pair of free throws, cutting the deficit down to 22 points at 67-45, but Savannah State ended the Bucs threat and closed out the 75-47 victory inside Tiger Arena.
Savannah State held the 41-39 rebounding advantage in the game, with Dotson leading all players with seven boards in the contest. Fowler led all players with four steals, while Kalu and Jazmin Thomas paced all players with five assists apiece.
Charleston Southern returns home on Wednesday, November 20th, as the Buccaneers host Wofford inside the Buc Dome. Tipoff between CSU and the Terriers is set for 7 p.m.
