Lady Bucs unable to pull off comeback on Senior Day, 65-55

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Campbell used a 12-2 run late in the first half and scored the first six points in the second half in seizing control of the game as the Camels held off Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon inside the Buc Dome, 65-55.

The Lady Buccaneers continued to battle back throughout the final period as Erin Bratcher connected on two of her five three-pointers in the game in the half. Campbell, however, rode a 16 point, eight rebound performance in the half by Roslyn Presley in closing out their 19th win of the season.

Charleston Southern falls to 8-17, 3-13 in Big South Conference play with the loss, while Campbell improves to 19-9, 11-6 in conference action with the win.

"We have to box out," said head coach Fred Applin following the contest. "They out-rebounded us by 20 and we have to continue to work on that. Everything else was great; we shot the ball well, but when they (Campbell) made their runs, we just couldn't stop them."

During the pregame festivities, Charleston Southern recognized their five 2012-13 women's basketball seniors in Lakeitha Alston, Shay Jones, Kiki Rutledge, Helen Terry and Rachelle Coward, recognizing their accomplishments and accolades in front of the crowd in honor of their final game inside the Buc Dome.

When the action began, the Buccaneers again relied on their seniors on the court as Alston led the way with 16 points and six rebounds, playing 36 minutes on the court, while Jones finished in double-digits again with 10 points, connecting on two three-pointers in the loss.

"After the game, I brought all of the seniors up in front of the team and thanked them. We appreciate everything they did for us in the program," said Applin on the 2012-13 women's basketball senior class. "They did well for us, especially tonight; I just wish we could've done more for them."

Bratcher, courtesy of her five three-pointers rounded out the Lady Bucs in double-digits on the afternoon with 15 points, while DJ Fowler filled the statistics sheet with nine points, eight assists, seven rebounds and five steals in playing all 40 minutes on the floor.

Presley led all players in the scoring column in the game, scoring 20 points and pulling down 11 rebounds for the visiting Camels off the bench as Campbell held the overwhelming 35-3 advantage in points off the bench in the contest. The Camels also held the 48-28 rebounding advantage in the win and connected on 17-of-24 free throw attempts, hitting 70.8 percent of their attempts in the victory.

Charleston Southern and Campbell kept the action close for a majority of the first half with both teams struggling to hit from the floor over the first two minutes.The Lady Bucs took their first lead of the game with 16:11 to play following three's by Fowler and Bratcher as CSU went up 6-4.

Bratcher connected again from deep two minutes later to push the Bucs ahead 9-6, but Campbell rallied back to go up 11-10 following a layup by Presley with 12:01 on the clock.

Alston scored the next five points in the game, hitting a layup and a three-pointer to push CSU ahead 15-11, and following the third tie of the first half with 9:40 on the clock following a Tonisha Baker trey, Charleston Southern went up 21-17 as Alston drove in for another layup.

Jessica Moore came in firing off the bench for the Camels, connecting on a three-pointer with 7:05 remaining in the opening half, sparking a 12-2 run as Campbell went up 29-21 with 2:43 on the clock. Moore connected on a second trey during the stretch, while Heather Beadle capped off the run with a short jumper to give the Camels their largest lead of the half.

Charleston Southern closed out the final two minutes with Bratcher and Jones connecting on back-to-back three-pointers to pull the Lady Bucs within two points with 49 seconds remaining, but Alston's three-point attempt with seven seconds remaining clanged off the back iron, giving Campbell the 29-27 halftime lead.

Campbell jumped out scoring the first six points of the second half as Moore connected on her third trey of the game for the opening basket and Presley connected on a jumper inside the pain to put the Camels ahead 35-27.

Jones connected on a three-pointer with 13:58 remaining in the contest, bringing the Bucs back to within six at 40-34, but the Camels responded by scoring the next four points in taking their first double-digit lead of the game. Monique Spry connected on both baskets to push Campbell ahead 44-34 with 12:23 remaining.

Campbell built their largest lead of the game at 13 points with 5:44 remaining as the Camels scored six consecutive points with RaeChaun Edwards capping off the run from the free throw line, canning both attempts to put the visitors ahead 56-43.

Charleston Southern mounted a final comeback attempt, cutting the lead down to 60-53 on Bratcher's fifth three-pointer of the game, but Presley and Beadle extended the Camels lead back into double-digits from the free throw line and Baker closed out the contest from the charity stripe as CSU fell 65-55 at home.

Known for their accurate shooting from the free throw line in the season, Charleston Southern struggled from the stripe in the game, converting just 46.7 percent (7-of-15) in the game.

Edwards and Baker combined for 12 steals for the Camels in the contest, as both teams struggled to protect the ball in the contest with a combined 46 turnovers in the game.

"We'll have to continue to working on boxing out," commented Applin as the team looks ahead to next week's final road trip against Liberty and Longwood. "We're going to continue to fight, fight, fight in these games. We have two games left, and then we'll look forward to pulling off some upsets in the tournament."

Charleston Southern returns to the road to close out the 2012-13 regular season next week as the Lady Bucs travel to Longwood and Liberty. CSU is back in action on Thursday evening in Farmville, Va. to take on the Lancers, with tipoff set for 7 p.m. Campbell remains on the road for their final contest of the regular season, traveling to High Point on Thursday, with tipoff also set for 7 p.m.
