CAMDEN, S.C. – Charleston Southern finished fourth – first among six Big South teams – following a 289 in Sunday's final round at the 2014 Camden Intercollegiate, hosted by South Carolina.
The Buccaneers climbed two spots in the final round to finish behind event champion South Carolina (847), Wofford (848), and Furman (865). The Gamecocks shot a 275 (-5) in the final round to win the tournament, edging out Wofford by one stroke.
The Bucs edged out Radford by five shots to finish first in a Big South-heavy field. Of the 15 teams, CSU also topped Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian by 10 strokes, in addition to finishing well ahead of High Point and Gardner-Webb. CSU also finished ahead of regional foes Davidson, Appalachian State, USC Upstate, and Elon.
CSU's 9-over total on Sunday was the third-lowest of the day, behind the two leaders. Senior Jarrett Swan and sophomore Austin James both finished in the top 10. Freshman R.J. Keur added a 13th-place finish to give CSU three high finishes.
"I'm really pleased with our play this week, especially after a rough opening nine holes of the tournament," CSU Director of Golf Mike Wilson said Sunday afternoon. "R.J. (Keur), Jarrett (Swan), and Austin (James) all had their best finishes of the season. Jake Ezell played great in his first-ever event and most likely will see some action in the starting line-up soon. We have two weeks to get ready for our last event at the fall and we are going to do our best to win it."
Swan had three birdies on Sunday, part of final round 72 (+2) to finish with a total of 214 (+4). James shot a 72 (+2) with a pair of birdies on Sunday after posting a 68 on Saturday.
Keur had his lowest total as a collegian with a 68 (-2). He eagled the seventh hole Sunday and followed with birdies on No. 8 and No. 9 to shoot a 32 (-3) on the front nine.
Ezell played as an individual and backed up a 70 and 73 on Saturday with a 76 (+6) on Sunday. He finished with a total of 215 (+5).
Senior Will Pieper finished 56th with a 77 (+7) in his final round, while Nico Baena was 61st after a 76 (+6) on Sunday.
CSU's final event of the fall is Nov. 2-4 at Turtle Point Golf Club on Kiawah Island when the Bucs host the Wendy's Kiawah Classic.
