KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Charleston Southern posted a 294 (+6) in Tuesday's final round to finish ninth at the 2014 Wendy's Kiawah Classic, held at Turtle Point Golf Club.
Winthrop claimed the team championship with a 7-under 281 in Tuesday's final round to finish the event at even par as a team (864). The Eagles held off red-hot Georgia Southern by four strokes.
GSU shot 10-under par in the final round, led by Scott Wolfes' Turtle Point course record 63 (-9). Both were Wendy's Kiawah Classic records as well.
Wolfes tied Upstate's Ryan Cornfield for medalist honors at 210 (-6). Tomasz Anderson was third at 5-under, followed by Winthrop's Zach Seabolt (-3).
"I would like to thank Mike Giunta and Wendy's for their continued support of this event and Charleston Southern golf," CSU Director of Golf Mike Wilson said following the event. "The weather didn't cooperate on Saturday and Sunday, but the final two days out here were fantastic and the players delivered with some very impressive golf."
The Buccaneers finished at 887, one shot behind USC Upstate (886) and two shots back of Presbyterian (885) in the 20-team field. CSU played with only four players in the final two rounds after senior Jarrett Swan withdrew due to illness.
"Our guys really hung tough," Wilson said. "We made some mistakes, but had no margin for error with only four players. We're very close and hope we can realize our potential in the spring season."
Sophomore Jake Ezell was one of the bright spots of the tournament, finishing at 1-under par to tie for seventh. He picks up the first Top 10 of his career. He shot a 74 (+2) on Tuesday in a round, which included three birdies.
"For Jake to go out and shoot under par for the tournament is very impressive," Wilson said. "He's worked hard and is turning good rounds into events. He was a big boost from us this week."
Junior Nico Baena and sophomore Austin James tied for 35th. Baena was solid with a 73 (+1) and was at 2-under on the back nine before a stretch of three bogeys. James closed with a 73 (+1). He overcame a triple bogey on the first hole with three birdies in his next nine holes to get back to even par on the day.
Freshman R.J. Keur was 47th following a wild 74 (+2) on Tuesday. Keur eagled the par-5 thirteenth and had two birdies to finish the tournament at 10-over. Senior Jason Sauder had a second-straight 74 (+2) with five birdies in his round to finish 92nd. Freshman Dylan Patscot added a solid 73 (+1) on Tuesday, firing a 1-under 35 on his opening nine. Sophomore Daniel Gregory shot an 86 in his final round.
The event is the final of the fall for the Buccaneers' fall schedule.
