Buccaneers topped late by Camels on Senior Day, 72-71

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern led several times late in the second half and tied the game on a Tatum Jarvis layup with 22 seconds remaining, but Campbell's Amanda Coffer's free throw with ten seconds left provided the difference for the Fighting Camels in a 72-71 win over the Bucs on Saturday at the Buc Dome.

CSU (8-17, 4-12 BSC) had two shots to win on its final possession following a missed free throw by Coffer, but Jarvis missed a jumper and a follow by Monique Maximilien wouldn't fall either as Campbell (16-9, 11-5 BSC) escaped with the victory.

The Bucs received excellent efforts from seniors Anicia Dotson and DJ Fowler, who were both recognized prior to tipoff – along with Erin Bratcher and Kirklin Kirkpatrick – as part of CSU's senior day festivities. Dotson scored 19 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting effort, and added ten rebounds for a double-double. Fowler was the catalyst for the Bucs for much of the day, tallying 19 points, five assists and three steals.

CSU trailed 66-63 at the 2:59 mark of the contest before rallying for six straight points to move ahead 69-66 with 1:40 remaining. Dotson drove inside for a layup, and then gave the Bucs the advantage with a tough spinning bank shot from the center of the paint. Jarvis showed off her athleticism for the final bucket of the stretch, driving the right side of the lane for a layup and a three-point CSU edge.

Campbell's Roslyn Presley, who finished with a game-high 24 points, provided an answer for the Fighting Camels. She converted a layup and then sunk a baseline jumper over Dotson to put Campbell back in front, 70-69, with 57 seconds left. Campbell added a free throw to take a two-point lead before Jarvis' lay in knotted the score at 71 apiece. Campbell's Amanda Coffer was fouled on the ensuing possession, though, and her free throw sent the Fighting Camels over the top.

Just as they did in the first half, Fowler and Dotson set the tone for the Bucs at the start of the second, spearheading a 10-0 run to give CSU a 37-31 lead.

Dotson drove the lane for a layup on CSU's first offensive trip of the second half, and Fowler came up with a steal and lay in moments late to tie the score. Fowler hit Dotson for a layup with a no-look pass in transition to account for CSU's next score and a 33-31 advantage. Fowler got her hands on another steal following Dotson's deflection of a pass, and Dotson hit one free throw to advance the edge to three. Dotson then converted a three-point play off an offensive rebound to cap the crucial stretch and give the Bucs a six-point lead.

Campbell ended the CSU run of unanswered points with an Edwards layup, only to see the Bucs take their largest lead of the game, 40-33, as Fowler hit a cutting Brophy for a layup and an ensuing three-point play following a foul.

Sparked by Kiera Gaines, Campbell then rattled off seven straight markers to tie the score at 40-40. Gaines scored five of the seven, hitting a layup and then a three from straight on to tie the game.

CSU bounced back with eight of the next ten points to forge a 48-42 lead as the ebb and flow of the second half continued. Fowler drained a corner three off a pretty pass from Dotson out of the high post, and freshman Brianna Lakes dropped in a baby hook shot from in close to put CSU ahead by three. Dotson then swished home a three from the right wing off a pick and pop with Fowler to give the Bucs a six-point advantage.

Campbell tied the game again with six consecutive points, and neither side led by more than three the rest of the way in a thrilling contest that energized a boisterous senior day crowd. Jarvis hit some tough shots for the Bucs during the middle stretch of the second half, tallying ten of her 13 markers after intermission to help CSU take Campbell down to the wire.

Neither side led by more than seven in a back-and-forth first half that featured three ties and three lead changes. CSU accounted for the seven-point advantage at the outset, with seniors Fowler and Dotson leading the way. Fowler drove in for a layup on the opening possession of the game, and scored inside again moments later following a steal by Rochelle Brophy. Dotson capped the Bucs' opening flurry with a three thanks to an offensive rebound by Alyssa Mann, giving CSU a 7-0 lead at the 17:18 mark.

Campbell held CSU scoreless for the next 3:15, though, compiling a 9-0 run to move into the lead. Gaines scored the first five points of the spurt and started it with an old-fashioned three-point play. Ashley James and Janelle Brown added baskets to put Campbell in front, 9-7.

Campbell pushed its lead to six twice, but back-to-back treys by Jarvis and Bratcher allowed CSU to keep pace.

Trailing 22-17 with 7:36 left in the opening half, the Bucs recorded an 8-2 spurt to surge back into the lead. Fowler knocked down a three from the top of the key to get CSU started, and Bratcher buried one from the wing to pull the Bucs within one. Solid ball movement put CSU back in front, as Brianna Lakes shoveled off an inside pass to Monique Maximilien for a layup and a 25-24 lead.

Fowler provided a highlight reel play late in the stanza for CSU, crossing off her defender and firing a no-look pass to Monique Maximilien for a layup to cut the Campbell lead to 28-27. The Fighting Camels would go into halftime up by four, thanks to a D-Janelle Brown triple that closed out the first half scoring.

CSU wraps up its home schedule on Monday night against High Point. Tipoff at the Buc Dome is slated for 7 p.m.
