HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Charleston Southern matched tournament champion USC Aiken with a 295 (+7) in Tuesday's final round to finish third at the ninth-annual Wexford Plantation Invitational, held on the 6,913-yard, par 72 Wexford course.
The Buccaneers finished six shots behind USC Aiken and five shots back of Presbyterian in their first event of the spring season. The Buccaneers finished at 894, but their Tuesday total was their lowest round of the event by four strokes.
Junior Jarrett Swan finished in a tie for sixth, followed closely by seniors David Denlinger and Ross Thomson, both of whom finished tied for ninth, to give the Bucs three golfers in the Top 10. Junior Will Pieper turned in the Bucs' best round of the day with a 73 (+1) and gave the Bucs solid rounds in his first and third rounds of the tournament. Junior Jason Sauder rallied from a rough Monday to give the Bucs a counted score on Tuesday with a 74 (+2).
"After a tough start to the final round, the guys really battled back," CSU head coach Mike Wilson said Tuesday afternoon. "I'm really proud of Jason Sauder for shooting 74 and helping the team score. All-in-all, the week was not a bad start to the spring. We just need to make more putts."
VCU's Adam Ball shot a six-under-par 66 over the final 18 holes to earn medalist honors by one stroke over the second-round leader Davis Parker of Presbyterian. Swan finished 10 strokes back of Ball, while Denlinger and Thomson were 11 strokes off the pace.
USC Aiken maintained its second-round lead to capture the team title, although the Pacers had to hold off a hard-charging Presbyterian College squad to grab a one-stroke victory 888 to 889. Presbyterian shot the low team-round of the tournament with its even-par 288 score on Tuesday.
