Box Score BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Charleston Southern's second half comeback attempt was sparked by double-digit performances off the bench by Tatum Jarvis and Alise Karlsone, but the Buccaneers were unable to battle their way all the way back in falling inside Paul Porter Arena to Gardner-Webb, 70-54.
Jarvis scored a team-high 15 points and had eight rebounds for CSU as the Buccaneers fought their way back from a 14 point deficit to bring the margin back to within five points at 51-46 with 6:56 remaining. However, the Runnin' Bulldogs responded with a 10-0 run on two three-pointers by Kiera Currie and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way in closing out the Big South Conference win.
In the Big South Conference women's basketball's first ESPN3 broadcast of the season, CSU center Monique Maximilien shone in the paint for the Bucs, pulling down a career-high 16 rebounds, including 12 on the defensive end to help CSU hold the 42-41 advantage on the glass. Alyssa Mann scored 14 points and added five assists for the Bucs, while Karlsone had 12 points and hit a three-pointer in the loss.
CSU fell to 3-11, 0-6 in Big South play on the season with the loss. The Bucs return home to the Buc Dome on Tuesday night as CSU hosts Coastal Carolina in a Big South Conference matchup. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Chanticleers is set for 7 p.m.
Olivia Parker led Gardner-Webb (7-9, 3-4 BSC) with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Alexus Hill (15 points) and Currie (11 points) were also in double-digits for the Runnin' Bulldogs. GWU shot 38.6% from the floor and 46.7% from behind the arc in their third straight Big South win.
GWU scored the first 11 points of the game and held CSU scoreless over the first 6:46 before the Jarvis broke the seal over the basket at the 13:14 mark to put the Bucs on the board. Jarvis added a three-pointer three minutes later and Christal Barnett drilled the second of two free throw attempts to cut the GWU lead down to 10 at 18-8 with 9:40 left in the first half.
CSU found their mark from long range as Karlsone drilled a three-pointer and Mann connected from behind the arc to put the score at 21-16 with 6:47 to play. The Runnin' Bulldogs responded with a 9-0 run to put the lead back at double-digits following a pair of Gerda Paulauskaite free throws, but CSU battled back just before halftime. Jarvis scored six of the last eight Bucs points of the half including a layup with 42 seconds on the clock to put the score at 33-27 GWU at the break.
The Bucs continued their run at the start of the second half as Alecia Hardy drove in for a layup on the first CSU possession, but the Runnin' Bulldogs lead went back up to double-digits at 11 at 49-38 with 10:23 remaining on the three-point play from Parker.
CSU made their final run over the next four minutes, cutting the lead down to five points as Karlsone connected on a pair of layups and Mann and Jarvis added baskets, but it was not enough as GWU went on a 10-0 run to take control of the game the rest of the way.
The Buccaneers bench reached the 30 point mark for the eighth time this season as CSU outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 35-18.
