CHARLESTON, S.C. - An early 8-0 run in the second half propelled visiting Coastal Carolina past Charleston Southern on Tuesday night in Big South Conference action as the Buccaneers fell 71-62 inside the Buc Dome to the visiting Chants.
With the score tied at 35-35 at the break, Coastal Carolina scored 16 of the first 23 points to take a nine point lead at 51-42 with 12:49 remaining on an Alira Mihocic layup. The Buccaneers battled back behind Tatum Jarvis' 11 second half points to cut the deficit down to six with 4:57 remaining, but the Chants pulled away late from the free throw line as the Bucs fell at home in conference play.
Alecia Hardy scored a career-high 16 points in the contest to lead four Buccaneers in double-digits in the game. The freshman guard connected on a season-best four three-pointers in 33 minutes' action as CSU shot 35.0% as a team from behind the arc.
Alyssa Mann was in double-digits in the scoring column for the fifth straight game with 14 points and the redshirt sophomore guard added three steals. Jarvis added 14 points and five rebounds off the bench, while Alise Karlsone had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the loss.
Anna Vogt led all scorers with 21 points for the visiting Chanticleers as Coastal Carolina shot 57.4% from the floor in the win. AJ Jordan added 20 points, while Alexis Robinson had 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Chants snapped a six-game losing streak with the victory.
Mann connected on a three-pointer on the opening possession and Hardy drilled a three to give CSU the early 6-4 edge over the first three minutes of the game. Hardy's second triple of the first hald put the Bucs up seven at 13-6, while Mann connected deep in the left corner to spot CSU with their largest lead of the night at eight points with 13:26 remaining in the half to put the Bucs up 16-8.
Coastal Carolina responded with an 8-0 run to tie the game up as Robinson scored four in a row before Karlsone ended the stretch with a jumper in the paint to put the Bucs back on top. The teams traded baskets the rest of the first half with CSU going up by four with 56 seconds remaining following a pair of Mann's free throws. Vogt connected on a layup on the next Chants' possession and Robinson hit a jumper in the paint with two seconds remaining to tie the game up for the fifth time and send the game into the break with the teams tied 35-35.
After Vogt connected on a jumper and Mann answered with a pair of free throws to tie the game up for the sixth time, the Chants went on a 14-5 run over the next six minutes to take a 51-42 lead on the Mihocic layup. Coastal Carolina's lead reached double-digits with 8:39 remaining as Ced Gibson made the first of two free throw attempts and Jordan connected on a layup two minutes later to put the score at 58-46 in favor of the guests.
The Bucs rallied back with six straight points as Karlsone drove in for a pair of left-handed layups and Jarvis hit a pair of free throws to put the score at 58-52 with 4:57 remaining. That was as close as CSU was able to get the rest of the way though as Coastal Carolina went back up by double-digits one minute later on their way to closing out the 72-61 victory.
In a game featuring the two teams leading the conference in turnover margin, CSU's defense proved to be a more active on the night, winning the turnover margin 13-18.
Charleston Southern remains at home this weekend as the Bucs host Liberty on Saturday afternoon inside the Buc Dome. Tipoff between CSU and the Lady Flames is set for 2 p.m. on the Big South Network.
