Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - Alyssa Mann scored a career-high 29 points and Shauntavia Dobson sparked the Buccaneers in the second half as Charleston Southern defeated visiting Wofford on Monday night in the Buc Dome, 74-64.
Mann scored 12 of CSU's 18 points in the first period and finished 8-for-15 from the floor and 10-for-12 from the free throw line in pacing the Bucs with her second straight 20+ point effort. The senior guard added three assists and three rebounds in the win.
"(Alyssa) Mann is a tough player," said CSU head coach Fred Applin. "She sacrifices her body on the court all the time. She is a gamer and she is always ready to play. She was huge for us tonight and she always sets the tone for us."
Wofford (0-4) fought their way back into the game in the fourth period as the Terriers brought a double-digit margin down to four points on two separate occasions. However, Dobson came up big for the Buccaneers (3-1) with 19 points over the final 13 minutes of the contest with the sophomore guard connecting a career-high five three-pointers as the Bucs clinched their third straight victory.
"(Tay) Dobson can really shoot," said Applin. "She was great there for us in that stretch. I challenged all of them to just play basketball and have fun. We had a game plan and we stuck to it. They really gutted it out tonight and deserved to win."
The Buccaneers also dominated the battle of the boards on Monday night with Monique Maximilien recording her second straight and third career double-double. The CSU senior center finished the night with 10 points and 13 rebounds while adding two blocked shots n 29 minutes of action
"We played really hard tonight," Applin commented. "I told our team 'we are in a fight.' We were going to have to out work and out hustle and just do the scrappy things to come out with a win. We did that really well tonight."
Charleston Southern has a quick turnaround to their next game as the Bucs host Columbia International tomorrow night in the Buc Dome as a part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team. The women's team tips off at 5 p.m. on the Big South Network, while the men host ETSU at 7:30 p.m. in the nightcap.
Mann had the hot hand early for the Bucs as the senior guard connected on five of her first six shots from the floor to lead all players with 12 points in the first period. With the score tied 2-2, the Bucs went on a 16-3 run to end the period with Mann sparking the stretch with back-to-back three's, while Rachel Burns connected on a triple on CSU's final possession to give the Bucs the 18-5 lead.
The Bucs' lead reached 14 points at 23-9 following a Maximilien jumper from the left wing at the 7:42 mark before the Terriers fought back in the second period. Wofford outscored the Bucs 12-5 the rest of the way with Chanel Strokes and Chloe Wanink both connecting on three-pointers to send the teams into the halftime break with CSU leading 28-21.
Out of the break Wofford opened up the third period with five straight points to pull CSU's lead down to two at 28-26 before Mann connected on her first three-pointer of the period to end the stretch. Dobson took over late in the period, finishing with eight of CSU's final 10 points of the frame to propel the Bucs to the 43-33 lead heading into the fourth.
The teams combined for 62 points and 33 free throw attempts over the fourth period with both squads connecting at a high rate. Wofford went 14-of-17 from the line in their comeback attempt, while CSU hit 14-of-16 including 13-of-14 over the final two minutes in closing out the win.
Burns finished the game with nine points for the Bucs with the freshman guard hitting all four of her free throw attempts down the stretch.
