Buccaneers' fourth quarter comeback falls short at CofC

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Alyssa Mann recorded her third straight 20 point outing for the Buccaneers as Charleston Southern fell to the College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon in TD Arena, 81-66.

Rachel Hardy and Monique Maximilien sparked a fourth quarter comeback for Charleston Southern (4-2) as the Buccaneers battled their way back from 26 point deficit to bring the game all the way back to within 14 points. However, the comeback fell short as CofC (3-2) sealed the win from the free throw line.

Mann led all players with 25 points on the floor with the senior guard connecting on 9-of-19 shots from the floor including three three-pointers in the contest. She also went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the contest.

Maximilien narrowly missed out on her third double-double of the season as the senior center finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Maximilien did most of her damage from the free throw line in hitting 6-of-8 attempts from the stripe.

Burns was also in double-digits for the second straight game in finishing with 11 points. The freshman guard connected on a pair of three-pointers early in the contest as CSU built a 16-11 lead after the first period.

Mann and CofC's Breanna Bolden came out on fire to open the game with Bolden connecting on her first four shots to lead all players with nine points, while Mann led the Bucs with seven points over the opening period. The Bucs utilized a late run at the end of the period with Mann connecting on back-to-back jumpers in transition to give CSU the 16-11 lead at the end of the first.

The Cougars rallied back in the second period with CofC taking advantage of an 18-0 run in building a double-digit halftime lead. CofC went up 11 at 38-27 with 1:52 remaining following the Kelsey Booth layup, while Darien Huff added a late layup as the Bucs went into the half trailing 42-30.

The Cougars lead reached 26 with 8:35 to play in the contest, before the Bucs mounted their comeback attempt started by Mann's third three-pointer of the contest. CSU went on a 12-2 run to cut the margin down to 16 following a Hardy three-pointer at the 3:39 mark to cut the lead down to 74-58. Hardy drilled another three-pointer at the 2:33 mark to put the score at 77-63, but that was as close as CSU was able to come as the Bucs fell to the Cougars to close out the month of November.

Bolden led CofC with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting, while Jackie Luna-Castro (15), Booth (14) and Huff (10) were all in double-digits in the scoring category.

CSU returns home to the Buc Dome on Tuesday night as the Bucs open Big South Conference play at home against Winthrop. Tipoff on the Big South Network is set for 7 p.m.
