Bucs unable to hold off Bulldogs in Big South matchup on Saturday afternoon

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern was unable to come back from a second half UNC Asheville run as the Buccaneers fell in the Buc Dome on Saturday afternoon, 58-50.

The Bulldogs (12-3, 5-1) built multiple possession leads in both the third and fourth quarters against the Bucs (8-7, 3-3). CSU tied the game up three times in the fourth quarter, including 44-44 on a Monique Maximilien jumper in the paint, but the Bucs were unable to take the lead the rest of the way in falling at home for just the second time in the 2015-16 season.

"We know that in conference play, it is always going to be a tough, scrappy game," said CSU head coach Fred Applin. "We were coming off a good, come from behind win the other night against High Point. Today we had a tough one against one of the top teams in the Big South. You want to win at home, but I'm proud of my team and their effort. There are always areas we need to improve. We can't have those stretches of 2-3 minutes where we don't score or don't get rebounds. That's what really separated us at the end."

Maximilien led the Bucs with 12 points and six rebounds in the contest. The senior center added three blocked shots in the game to pace CSU in the contest.

"Mo (Maximilien) played really well tonight," said Applin. "She had some foul trouble, but you can see how important she is to this team. She just does so much for us beyond her points and rebounds. We need to do a better job as a team with how we foul and how we crash the boards."

Ke'Asia Jackson added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Elyse Kiploks had another solid game for CSU with six points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots in the loss.

Chatori Major led UNC Asheville with 19 points in the game, while Tianna Knuckles added 14 points and two three-pointers in the win. Paige Love led the Bulldogs with 10 rebounds as Asheville held the 40-31 advantage on the boards.

The Bucs forced eight Asheville turnovers in the first quarter to offset a 1-for-12 performance from the floor over the period to keep the game tied at 9-9 at the break. Rachel Burns connected on a three-pointer with five seconds left in the period for the lone CSU basket, while Nayla Long and Kiploks both converted a pair of free throw attempts during the frame.

CSU built a 20-11 lead with 3:32 left in the second quarter on a Maximilien jumper in the paint for their largest lead of the game. Jackson added a three-pointer during the stretch, but the Bulldogs ended the period with five of the final seven points to send the game into the half with the Bucs leading 22-17.

The Bucs' lead reached five at 24-19 following a Maximilien jumper early in the third quarter. The Bulldogs took their largest lead of the quarter at 37-31 with 2:09 remaining following a Major jumper in the paint and held the three point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

CSU tied the game up on three separate occasions in the fourth quarter with the final coming with 4:58 left in the contest as Maximilien connected on the jumper in the paint. However, Knuckles converted a three-pointer on the other end from the top of the key and the Bulldogs connected on five of their final six free throw attempts in completing the Big South win.

Charleston Southern is back in action on Tuesday night as the Bucs make the trip to Boiling Springs, N.C. and Paul Porter Arena for a matchup against Gardner-Webb. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Runnin' Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m. on the Big South Network.
