Box Score CLINTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern was unable to hold off a third quarter Presbyterian run as the Buccaneers fell on the road to the Blue Hose in the Templeton Center on Tuesday night, 55-37.
The Buccaneers (11-12, 6-8) used an 11-2 run to build a 28-20 lead behind eight Rachel Burns' points in taking their largest lead of the game with 5:37 remaining in the quarter. Presbyterian (14-9, 10-4) rallied back as the Blue Hose utilized an 18-2 run the rest of the quarter with Salina Virola connecting on a three-pointer with five seconds left to take a 38-30 lead.
Charleston Southern was unable to pull the game back within six points the rest of the way as the Buccaneers fell to the Blue Hose for the second time this season.
Burns led the Bucs with 12 points in 18 minutes play. The freshman guard was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line and added two rebounds and two steals in the loss. Alyssa Mann was also in double-digits for CSU with 10 points, adding four rebounds and two assists.
Elyse Kiploks, Monique Maximilien and Nayla Long all had six rebounds in the game as CSU held the 34-24 rebounding advantage in the game. However, PC forced 24 CSU turnovers and converted them into 17 points in completing the win.
Virola led the Blue Hose with 15 points from the floor, while Allie Wagner finished with 11 points and four rebounds in the win. Aianna Kelly added nine points and three assists in setting up the Blue Hose offense as PC shot 47.4% (9-19) from the floor in the second half in recording the home win.
The Buccaneers defense came out strong in the first quarter as CSU held Presbyterian scoreless over the final 8:22 in taking the 11-4 lead. Mann had seven points over the first 10 minutes, including a three-pointer at the 6:27 mark, while Burns added four points as the Bucs held the early lead.
CSU continued to lead early in the second quarter as Ke'Asia Jackson connected on a jumper at the 6:22 mark to give the Bucs the 13-7 lead. PC rallied back and finished the half on an 11-4 run capped by a free throw by Wagner with 1:13 remaining to take the 18-17 halftime lead.
CSU went up eight points with 5:54 remaining in the third quarter following a pair of free throws from Burns as the Bucs' freshman came out on fire to open the period. Burns connected on an early three-pointer to open the half and added a three-point play to give CSU their largest lead of the ball game. The Blue Hose closed out the quarter on an 18-2 run sparked by a three-pointer from Yakima Clifton, while Kelly and Virola both connected from behind the arc to give PC the 38-30 lead.
The Blue Hose went up double-digits with 6:45 left in the game following the Clifton free throw. PC closed out the game from the free throw line in recording the Big South win.
Charleston Southern returns home to the Buc Dome on Saturday afternoon as the Buccaneers host Radford. Tipoff between CSU and the Highlanders is set for 2 p.m. on the Big South Network.
