Buccaneers close out Big South regular season with loss at UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Charleston Southern was unable to slow down a balanced UNC Asheville attack on Tuesday night as the Buccaneers closed out the 2015-16 regular season on the road in Kimmel Arena, 91-68.

Alyssa Mann closed out her final regular season game with the Buccaneers with a team-high 12 points. The senior guard added six assists and five rebounds from the floor to pace a CSU (13-16, 8-12) offense that shot 37.3% from the floor as a team in the contest.

Georgia Elliott-King added nine fourth quarter points for the Bucs as the freshman guard connected on a trio of three-pointers as CSU outscored the Bulldogs 31-18 over the final 10 minutes of the game. Nayla Long and Alecia Hardy also added nine points apiece in the loss.

UNC Asheville (22-6, 15-4) never trailed in the contest and had five players in double-digits led by Bronaza Fitzgerald's double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Khalia Webb added 13 points, while Chatori Major (12), Tianna Knuckles (11) and Sonora Dengokl (10) all paced an Asheville offensive that connected on a 55.8% field goal percentage from the floor.

Major connected on a three-pointer on Asheville's second possession of the game and the Bulldogs built a double-digit lead on another Major triple at the 1:45 mark of the first quarter as the Buccaneers trailed 26-14 after the first quarter. The Bucs' deficit reached 20 points just before half despite eight first half points by Mann and five points from Long as CSU went into the break trailing 48-24.

Asheville's lead reached 30 points midway through the third quarter and reached 40 points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs closed out the season sweep over CSU.

Charleston Southern will open up the 2016 Big South Conference Women's Basketball Championships next Thursday in Kimmel Arena. Matchups and tipoff times will be set following the conclusion of the Big South regular season on Saturday.
