CHARLESTON, S.C. – Bryeasha Blair's floater at the buzzer gave South Carolina State a 60-58 win over Charleston Southern on Monday at the Buc Dome.
CSU falls to 2-5 following the defeat, while S.C. State improves to 3-4 with the win. Njeri Nelms and Shelby Wilbanks led the Bucs with 20 points each. Weknyne Dumorne added seven points and 15 rebounds.
Wilbanks made a layup to tie the game 58-58 with 15 seconds left. Following an S.C. State timeout, Blair got possession off a Kerry Watson missed jumper and floated the ball off the backboard and in the basket to give the Bulldogs the win at the buzzer.
Charleston Southern jumped out to a 12-9 lead on a Wilbanks jumper with 1:18 left in the first quarter. Burns' two free throws put CSU ahead 16-9 at the end of the first frame.
South Carolina State took its first lead of the game at 21-20 on a Dashanique Peterson jumper with 4:14 to go in the second quarter. Wilbanks knocked down two free throws to put CSU ahead 27-25. A Wilbanks layup gave the Bucs a 29-27 lead at halftime.
Nelms' jumper put Charleston Southern ahead 38-36 with 5:14 remaining in the third quarter. A Kemoni Jenkins traditional three-point play gave the Bulldogs a 39-38 lead, but the Bucs went on a 10-4 run to close the period and take a 48-43 lead at the end of the third frame.
S.C. State bounced back and a Jenkins layup put the Bulldogs ahead 52-51. Kyesha Lewis' three-pointer gave South Carolina State a 58-54 advantage with 5:21 left in the game. Wilbanks trimmed the margin to 58-56 on two free throws with 3:13 to go. Neither team scored again until the final 15 seconds when Blair's heroics helped the Bulldogs escape with the win.
