CSU falters down the stretch in 62-56 defeat at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Charleston Southern struggled to contain Winthrop as the Eagles had their best shooting performance of the season in a 62-56 win over the Bucs on Tuesday at the Winthrop Coliseum.

Winthrop shot a season-high 46.9% (23-of-49) from the field, while CSU went cold in the final four minutes, connecting on only one field goal as the Bucs dropped their sixth straight contest. CSU falls to 10-18, 5-12 following the defeat, while Winthrop improves to 3-25, 2-15 with the win.

In a back-and-forth first quarter, the Eagles grabbed their first lead at 8-6 on Ronata Rogers' jumper. Njeri Nelms connected on a jumper to make Winthrop's lead 14-12 with nine seconds to go until Emily Kelley's floater at the buzzer put the Eagles ahead 16-12 at the end of the first frame.

CSU scored only one field goal in the first three minutes of the second quarter as Winthrop's lead extended to 22-14 following a Miquela Santoro layup. The Bucs responded with an 8-2 run to cut the margin to 24-22 on Rachel Burns' layup with 2:33 to go. The Eagles held a 28-22 advantage at halftime.

Courtney Hagaman's three-pointer with 7:14 left in the third quarter was the first made shot from behind the arc for either team as Winthrop led 33-26. Hagaman's layup with 3:57 to go gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game a 39-29. CSU closed the period on an 11-4 run as Shauntavia Dobson's free throw with less than a second remaining trimmed Winthrop's lead to 43-40 at the end of the third stanza.

Nelms' jumper with 7:20 to play put the Bucs ahead 47-45 for CSU's first lead since early in the first quarter. Dumorne's layup extended the Bucs' advantage to 54-49. Winthrop answered with a 10-0 run to take a 59-54 lead on two Hagaman free throws with 1:09 remaining. Dumorne's jumper cut the Eagles' lead to 59-56. Winthrop converted on 3-of-6 free throws over the final 24 seconds as CSU missed its final three shots to give the Eagles the win.

Anika Riley led Winthrop with 17 points, while Hagaman added 14 points.

Inside the Numbers

  • Weknyne Dumorne scored 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field. The Miami, Fla. native added 11 rebounds to record her sixth double-double of the season.
  • Njeri Nelms scored 12 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the floor, while adding three rebounds and two assists.
  • Both teams shot 27.3% (3-of-11) from behind the three-point arc after failing to connect on a single three-pointer in the first half.
  • With the long ball not falling, CSU pounded the ball down low and held a 34-26 advantage in points in the paint.
  • Winthrop won the battle on the boards with a 35-31 rebounding edge.
