CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern recorded its third straight Big South win as the Buccaneers defeated Campbell, 63-59, on Tuesday at the Buc Dome.
CSU improves to 10-12, 5-6 following the win, while Campbell falls to 12-10, 5-6 with the loss. Weknyne Dumorne led four Bucs in double-figures with 15 points, while Shelby Wilbanks (13 points), Njeri Nelms (12 points) and Ke'Asia Jackson (12 points) all scored in double-digits.
Charleston Southern held a 57-50 lead when Campbell went on a 7-2 run to cut the margin to 59-57 on two Summer Price free throws with 1:13 left in the game. Nelms connected on 1-of-2 free throws to put CSU ahead 60-57 with 25 seconds to go. Following a defensive stop, Jackson made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to give the Bucs a 61-57 lead as CSU held on to secure the win.
Price led the Camels with 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting and 5-of-6 from behind the arc.
A seesaw first half saw Charleston Southern take a 12-10 lead after back-to-back baskets from Dumorne with 5:36 to play in the first quarter. Price's floater at the buzzer put Campbell ahead 16-14 at the end of the first frame.
The teams traded baskets as Nelms drained a trifecta to give CSU a 22-19 advantage. Wilbanks made a layup to put the Bucs ahead 27-24 with 4:13 left in the second period. CSU continued to apply the pressure on defense as the Bucs held the Camels to only four points in the final four minutes of the half. Nelms' jumper with two seconds to go made CSU's lead 32-28 at halftime.
Jackson connected on back-to-back jumpers midway through the third quarter to give the Bucs a 40-36 advantage. Campbell responded as two Kyra Davis free throws trimmed the margin to 42-40 with 3:25 remaining in the period. Dumorne's traditional three-point play ended a CSU scoring drought of nearly three minutes as the Bucs led 45-40 with 1:54 to go. Charleston Southern held a 47-45 lead at the end of the third stanza.
Campbell grabbed its first lead since the beginning of the second quarter when Caroline Bowns knocked down a three-pointer to put the Camels ahead 48-47 with 8:58 left in the game. CSU caught fire as the Bucs went on a 10-2 run that was capped off with a Nelms jumper with 5:44 remaining. Charleston Southern was able to withstand a late rally from Campbell to close out its third straight win.
