WBB Preview | Bucs open 2019-20 season with big road matchup at No. 12 Florida State

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Head Coach Fred Applin and the Buccaneers prepare to begin the 2019-20 women's basketball season this week as Charleston Southern heads down south to Tallahassee, Fla. for a Tuesday night matchup against Florida State University.

The Bucs (0-0) open the season with two of their first three games on the road against Atlantic Coast Conference teams as CSU travels to FSU (Nov. 5) and North Carolina (Nov. 15).

It's the second matchup in program history between the Bucs and the Seminoles dating back to the 1997-98 year. CSU fell 72-51 in the first matchup between the two teams in Tallahassee.

CSU will field a mostly untested squad this season as the Buccaneers return seven players, but lost several key pieces from last year's Big South semifinal team. The Bucs top five scorers and top three rebounders all departed the program following last season, but CSU does return several veteran leaders in Tierra Steede, Kelsie Ruff-Mills, and Anna Webster. Ahlea Myers, Cailah Hicklin, and Sharita Godfrey also return to provide voices of experience for the Bucs.

The pair of road trips to ACC opponents wrap around a Saturday, November 9 home matchup against South Carolina State as CSU boasts a mostly home-heavy schedule in the non-conference season. The Bucs are only on the road one more time prior to the start of Big South. play with a December 4 road trip to Western Carolina in the middle of a five home-game stretch.

CSU was picked ninth overall in the Big South preseason poll as announced at the conference's media day on October 29. The Bucs are the lone Big South team that Florida State will face off against this season.

Florida State was picked third overall in the ACC preseason poll and 12th overall in the Associated Press preseason poll after finishing 25th last year in the AP's final poll. The Seminoles return most of last season's roster, including preseason All-ACC selections Kiah Gillespie and Nicki Ekhomu.

Tipoff between the Bucs and the Seminoles in the Donald L. Tucker Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5. The game will be carried live on the ACC Network Extra.
