Buccaneers fall to Cougars in Silver Cup matchup

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston tallied two goals in the second half to break a scoreless tie, and the Cougars (4-3) retained the Silver Cup with a 2-0 victory over Charleston Southern (3-4) on Wednesday at the CSU Soccer Field.

How It Happened
•    The teams went into halftime tied 0-0 despite combining for 17 shots.
•    It remained a defensive battle throughout most of the second half, staying scoreless into the 75th minute. 
•    The Cougars were able to break the deadlock with 15 minutes remaining in regulation on a goal by Caitlyn Gonzalez, assisted by Talia Colchico.
•    Charleston added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when Mary Katherine Waters scored, assisted by Olivia Freitas. 
•    The Bucs had two solid scoring opportunities the rest of the way, but shots by Grace Harr and Kat Klingensmith were just off target.

Inside the Numbers
•    The Cougars held a 23-15 advantage in shots and 9-3 on goal. 
•    Lauren McDonald led the Bucs with three shots followed by Harr, Dakota Fiedler, Erin Rush and Bri Robinson with two each.
•    Jazmin Gonzalez went the distance in goal and made seven saves.
•    Maggie Berlin and Meredith Holton each played 45 minutes in combining for the shutout.

News and Notes
•    Maddie Reilly played all 90 minutes for the seventh time in as many games this season.
•    Defenders Kayla Robinson and Juliana Barbaccia have been off the field for a combined eight minutes in seven contests.
