WBB Preview | Back on the road - CSU heads to UNC Asheville for Tuesday night clash

Charleston Southern is back on the road for another tough Big South matchup as the Buccaneers make the trip up I-26 toward Asheville, N.C. and Kimmel Arena on Tuesday night. Tipoff against UNC Asheville is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.

The Bucs (2-12, 0-5 Big South) are looking to sustain the momentum gained in their previous game on Saturday afternoon as Charleston Southern early mounted the comeback against visiting High Point.

Trailing heading into the fourth quarter, the Buccaneers rode sophomore wing Sharita Godfrey's 16-point outburst in the frame on their way to outscoring the Panthers 29-16 down the stretch in the CSU 84-70 loss. Carmella Walker added nine points over the final 10 minutes as the Buccaneers closed out the home contest against HPU.

Godfrey's 16-point fourth quarter highlighted a career performance for the Columbia, S.C. native as she finished with her first collegiate 20-point game. Godfrey was 10-of-14 from the floor for 22 points and added a pair of three-pointers and two rebounds in the loss.

The performance raised her season totals to 9.9 points per game as Godfrey sits third on the Bucs in scoring average on the season. She's also second on the team with 5.6 rebounds per game, as well as second in overall team steals with 22.

Walker's 15-point performance against the Panthers highlighted another double-digit scoring output for the junior guard. She's hit the double-digit mark in eight games this season, including three of the last four and five of the last seven games. She's currently one of two Bucs averaging double-digits scoring on the season at 11.0 points per game, while leading the team with 33 steals.

Walker's prowess at the free throw line has also become a major weapon for CSU as the New Smyrna Beach, Fla. native has posted three games with at least seven made free throws, including a 12-for-12 performance from the stripe back on November 30 against North Dakota. She is currently third in the Big South in free throw percentage at 81.5% (53-of-65), and has converted her last 13 attempts from the line dating back to the January 4 game against Radford.

Tierra Steede continues to lead the Bucs' scoring efforts on the season with the senior forward averaging 11.6 points per game on the year. Steede has started each of the seven games she's lined up for the Bucs this season and currently paces the Bucs with 6.0 rebounds per game.

Other statistical leaders for CSU heading into Tuesday's contest includes freshman forward Asia Smith leading the Bucs with nine blocked shots, while freshman guard Tori Gittens leads CSU with 14 made three-pointers.

UNC Asheville is back among the conference leaders again as the Bulldogs continue a strong stretch under the tenure of head coach Brenda Kirkpatrick Brown. Asheville was picked third in the Big South preseason poll and received one first place vote and the Bulldogs have lived up to the billing with a strong 11-4 record, including a 5-1 start to the conference season.

Asheville boasts a 6-1 mark at home inside Kimmel Arena on the year with their lone loss coming out of conference play against UNC Greensboro. Since then, the Bulldogs have picked up victories over Montreat (89-45), S.C. State (82-51), Presbyterian (54-39), Campbell (60-52), and High Point (76-60) inside their home arena.

Asheville's lone conference loss came at the hands of Hampton University back on December 31 with the Pirates topping the Bulldogs 68-59.

Redshirt senior guard Sonora Dengokl was a preseason First Team Big South selection and sits among the team leaders with 12.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 45.0% from the floor. Junior guard Nadiria Evans is the team's scoring leader with 14.3 points per game, while senior center Brooke Jordan-Brown leads the team with 10.0 rebounds per game and has posted 11 blocked shots on the year.

Asheville leads the all-time series between the two programs with a 38-29 mark dating back to the first matchup back in 1985. The Bucs have a 21-12 mark at home in the series, but trail the Bulldogs 25-8 away from the Buccaneer Field House.

Over recent history, the series has swung toward the Bulldogs with Asheville winning nine of the last 11 contests. CSU has picked up home wins in two of the last three seasons, including a 70-59 victory last February.
