Bucs unable to overcome Campbell defensive effort in series opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Alyssia Faye scored a career-high 18 points on Friday evening to pace Charleston Southern as the Buccaneers fell at home to visiting Campbell, 57-35.

Campbell (9-5, 6-3 Big South) utilized a strong defensive presence in the second half to limit the Buccaneers (6-7, 4-5 Big South) to just an 18.8% (3-of-16) shooting percentage in the second-half as CSU fell in the first matchup between the two programs.

Faye was 9-of-13 for the Bucs and scored six of CSU's eight points in the second half to pace the Bucs' scoring efforts in the game. She added five rebounds in the loss. Tori Gittens chipped in five points, including hitting CSU's lone three-pointer in the game.

Taya Bolden paced Campbell with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the game, while Luana Serranho added 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting in the Camels' win.
 
First Quarter
Tori Gittens opened the scoring in the contest with a three-pointer from the right wing to put the Bucs in the lead early. The Camels responded with a 10-2 run highlighted by a pair of Tatyana Carver three-pointers to take the 10-5 lead with 5:03 remaining in the quarter. Alyssia Faye and Gittens responded with back-to-back baskets to cut the Campbell lead down to one point at the 3:43 mark, but the Camels went on an 8-1 run to close out the quarter and take the 18-10 lead into the break.

Second Quarter
The Camels lead hit double-digits at 22-10 following a Bolden turnaround jumper at the 8:56 mark for their largest lead of the first half. The Bucs responded with a 9-0 run with Faye scoring eight of CSU's nine points in the run to narrow the Campbell lead down to 22-19 with 5:03 remaining in the first half. The teams swapped baskets the remainder of the half with Janaia Fargo hitting a turnaround jumper into the paint with five seconds left to put the Bucs down 31-27 heading into the half.

Third Quarter
Campbell shot 53.8% from the floor in the third quarter with Serranho (9) and Bolden (6) combining to outscore the Bucs 15-6 over 10-minute stretch. The Camels' lead reached 16 at 46-30 following a Serranho layup, but Faye put in the final points of the quarter on a layup with 24 seconds left on the clock to send the teams into the fourth quarter with CSU trailing 46-33.

Fourth Quarter
Faye connected on a short jumper at the 8:56 mark in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as CSU was able to get the rest of the way as Campbell pulled away in the 57-35 win.
