CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern women's cross country and track & field athlete Taylor Barnes has been named a nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year, the organization announced.
Barnes is a two-time All-Conference selection in cross country and a three-time All-Academic recipient from the conference. This past year, she was named the 2021 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year after posting a 4.00 GPA while majoring in public health.
In addition to her success in the classroom, Barnes continued to excel in competition. The Florence, S.C. native finished fourth at the 2021 Big South Cross Country Championships and set a new personal record with a time of 17:40.9 to eclipse her previous mark by nearly 23 seconds.
She carried that momentum into the track season where she posted the second-fasted 10,000-meter time in program history after crossing the line with a time of 37:45.45 at the conference's outdoor championship. Barnes also set the program's second-fastest 5K time at the 2021 Raleigh Relays this spring.
Rooted in Title IX and directed by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, the NCAA Woman of the Year program celebrates the accomplishments of female college athletes across all three NCAA divisions. Over 220,000 women are competing in college sports, and the NCAA received 535 nominations for this prestigious award.
The Big South Conference and other conference offices around the country will select up to two candidates from their pool of member school nominees. The Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose from that group the Top 30 honorees – 10 from each division of the NCAA. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will announce the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year this fall.
