Late-match heroics propel Bucs to first win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.Jenea Knight scored the game-winning goal with 12 seconds left on the clock Sunday afternoon, as Charleston Southern rallied to defeat Jacksonville, 2-1, at Southern Oak Stadium for its first win of the 2021 season.

Knight's match winner came 20 minutes after Emma Ryan tied the match for the Bucs.

Jenna Moran made four saves in goal for the Bucs. Daniela Contreras led CSU with three shots in the win, while Knight and Bri Robinson had two apiece.

After a scoreless defensive battle in the first half, Jacksonville took the lead just five minutes into the second half when Lola Negrete converted on a penalty kick. From that moment on, however, the Bucs seized control of the match.

CSU outshot Jacksonville by a 6-2 margin in the final 40 minutes of the match, including a 3-1 advantage in shots on target during that span. Less than 20 minutes after the Dolphins took the lead, the Bucs evened the score on a high shot by Ryan that found the left side of the net.

Even after tying the match, the Bucs continued to up the pressure as Robinson forced a Jacksonville save with a low shot just minutes after the tying goal. CSU finally broke through to take the lead in the dying seconds, as Knight beat goalkeeper Mariah Winebrenner with a low shot just 12 seconds before the final whistle to clinch the Bucs' first win of the season.
