CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charleston Southern's
Skylar Baltezegar has been named the Big South Freshman of the Week for the second-straight week Jan. 3, the league office announced Monday as part of its weekly awards release. She is the first player in the conference to earn back-to-back plaudits, this season.
STRONG IN LEAGUE DEBUT
Baltezegar, an Orange Park, Florida, product, shined in the Big South opener last week in leading the Buccaneers to their first triumph of the campaign with a 67-54 victory at Winthrop, Dec. 29. She matched her career best with 13 points on 5-of-7 field goals and another three at the foul line, while hauling in eight rebounds (all defensive), distributing five assists and registering four blocked shots with a steal in 26 minutes.
It marked her second career game with double-figure points after previously netting 13 against College of Charleston Dec. 2. Her eight boards are the second most in a game during her inaugural collegiate campaign, falling shy of the 12 she collected against George Mason Nov. 16 in her Buccaneer Coliseum debut.
SECOND OF THE SEASON
She joins three-time recipient Rachael Rose of USC Upstate and two-time winner Nakyah Terrell of High Point as multiple freshman of the week honorees, this season.
Baltezegar is the first Bucs women's player to garner multiple honors in the same season since four-time winner Ali Schwagmeyer in 2008-09. Kiki Rutledge was also claimed two plaudits in that same year as CSU dominated the league's freshman of the week awards.
BACK ON THE COURT
The forward will join the rest of her Buccaneers teammates on the hardwood this week as they return to action for a 7 p.m. Wednesday tip in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, at Gardner-Webb. Charleston Southern will be back inside the Buc Dome at 2 p.m. Saturday when it plays host to Campbell on ESPN+.
