Bucs Fall to No. 1 Gamecocks on the Road

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Charleston Southern fell on the road to the top-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday, falling 87-23 at Colonial Life Arena. This was the final non-conference game of the 2022-23 season. 

First Half
Out of the gate, the Gamecocks held the Bucs (2-9) intact. The Bucs were out rebounded 16-6 and shot just 1/13 in the opening quarter. They were held scoreless for the first until the 4:08 mark, when Zaire Hicks knocked down a three-point attempt to make it 11-3 in favor of the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks finished the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 20-3 lead.

The Gamecocks carried the momentum into the second quarter, stretching their lead out to 35-3 heading into the media timeout.The Bucs scored their first point of the quarter with 49.9 seconds left, when Catherine Alben knocked down a free throw and hit their first field goal when Saniya Jones knocked down a layup to end the half. The Gamecocks took a 35-6 lead into the locker room.

Defensively, the Bucs were able to hold the Gamecocks scoreless for the final 5:05 of the first half and forced six turnovers.

Second Half
The Bucs scored their first points of the second half with a lay-up by Alben with a little over six minutes left in the third quarter. The Bucs were able to score 17 points in the second half, but surrendered 52. Kennedi Jackson scored seven in the fourth quarter.
 
Kajsa Alberg made her first career start after her career-high nine points against East Tennessee State. She pulled down a rebound in 18 minutes of work. Zaire Hicks was the leading scorer for the Bucs with eight points. She was 2/5 from beyond the arc on the afternoon. Kennedi Jackson, Saniya Jones and Madison Adamson each pulled down three rebounds. 
 
Next Up
Charleston Southern will take 11 days off for the Christmas holidays before coming back to the Buc Dome on December 29th to host Gardner-Webb for their Big South opener.
