CHARLESTON, S.C. – The goals came early and often between the rain drops Thursday afternoon, as Charleston Southern women's soccer opened its 2022 campaign with a 9-0 victory over visiting Brewton-Parker at CSU Soccer Field. Every healthy member of the roster saw significant minutes with head coach
Jose Gomez playing 23 total players with starting netminder
Sara Curtis the lone to go the distance and play the full 90 minutes.
NEARING TEAM RECORDS
CSU spent the afternoon approaching several single-game team records. The nine goals are the fourth-highest in school history and rank as the most since the all-time standard of 14 was set against Alabama State Aug. 28, 2009.
Additionally, the Bucs added nine assists to match the second-best all-time total with an effort at South Carolina State Sept. 26, 2000. Both of those performances fell shy of the tally in the aforementioned Alabama State contest.
Lastly, the 27 points accumulated are the fourth highest and the best since that same Alabama State matchup nearly 13 years ago.
HAT TRICK IN RETURN FOR FIEDLER
Graduate student
Dakota Fiedler made the most of her final season debut, netting a hat trick on just five shots in only 37 minutes after missing the entire 2021 campaign. It's the 14th hat trick in program history and the first since Toni Lashley against UNC Asheville Oct. 13, 2012. She joins the elite club trying to catch Lauren Jones' program-best four goals against Liberty Oct. 23, 1999.
Jenea Knight, last year's leading goal scorer, added a pair plus an assist for five points.
ASSIST RECORD FALLS TO ROBINSON
Bri Robinson made her presence known early, serving up helpers on each of the first-four goals to set a new school single-game record with the four assists. It tops the previous mark of three, last set by Rose Marie Senise against Howard Oct. 18, 2007.
Erin Rush joined her with multiple assists, handing out two and becoming only the sixth player in school history to dish more than one in a single game. Rush also scored once, the game's first goal in the second minute, for what proved to be the game winner.
FINAL GOAL THE FIRST FOR CONTRERAS
The Bucs capped their scoring onslaught with a tally in the 81st minute off the foot of
Daniela Contreras. Although she's been a part of the program since the Spring 2021 campaign, it marks her first collegiate score. She did not play that first season before earning a start in 12 of 15 matches a year ago.
CARLSON NETS HER FIRST
Scoring her first collegiate goal in the 42nd minute was
Sam Carlson. A transfer into the program this season from Niagara, she appeared in just two games over two seasons with the Purple Eagles before arriving in the Holy City.
CURTIS DEBUTS WITH CLEAN SHEET
Stepping in for Preseason Big South Goalkeeper of the Year
Jenna Moran between the pipes was Curtis, making two saves in picking up the shutout victory. Curtis faced little pressure from the Barons' attack, as the attempts came in the 22nd minute and the 90th minute on her way to tallying the clean sheet, CSU's first since a 2-0 road win at Hampton Oct. 16, 2021. It was the first in non-conference play since a scoreless draw against Stetson Sept. 2, 2021, at CSU Soccer Field.
