NORMAN, Okla. – Charleston Southern's Alan Smith and Ethan Willis were selected as Srixon/Cleveland Golf and Golf Coaches Association of American All-America Scholars recently. The duo were a part of 481 players and 169 schools from Division I to be selected.
In order to qualify for nomination, an individual must be of at least sophomore athletic and academic standing, participate in at least 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 and own a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2. Nominees must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his respective institution.
As two members of the Bucs' Big South championship squad and participants in the NCAA Tournament, the pair guided the Buccaneers to a regular-season tournament title at the Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate in late March to spark the postseason berth.
Smith posted the low CSU score in three events throughout the 2021-22 season, including the opener at the Graeme McDowell Intercollegiate, the Grandover Collegiate and the aforementioned Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate. He finished the campaign with a 74.52 stroke average, tallying under-par totals in four tournaments and was in the Top-10 individuals three times, including a tie for third with a 5-under 211 at the Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate.
He registered two rounds of 69 and was under par in seven times during 18-hole play. His second rounds averaged the best, at 73.6 strokes on his way to earning All-Big South Honorable Mention and All-Big South Academic Team plaudits.
Willis, a transfer into the program from Queens (N.C.), capped his only season in the blue and gold with a 73.93 stroke average. He saw action in all 10 tournaments, leading Charleston Southern at the spring-opening Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate with a 3-over 219 on his way to tying for 15th on the individual leaderboard.
His best round came during his first 18 holes in a CSU uniform, posting a 4-under 68 at the Graeme McDowell Intercollegiate. He concluded the event at 2-under par 214, his best relation-to-par and total score of the season, garnering a seventh-place tying finish among the 90 individuals in the field.
He added an Even par 216 during the stroke play portion of the Big South Championships, helping solidify the Bucs a spot in the match play portion on their way to the league crown.
Both players scored valuable points during the Big South match play, in the semifinals and final, helping seal 3-2 and 4-1 victories over Winthrop and Gardner-Webb, respectively.
The honor is the third consecutive for Smith, who wrapped up his career with CSU this season, while Willis received his first in a Charleston Southern uniform and in his collegiate career overall.
