CHARLESTON, S.C. – After dropping a home contest to Radford last Saturday, the Charleston Southern women's basketball will travel to Asheville, N.C. on Wednesday for the first of two games on the road. The Bucs will go into this week with a 2-15 (0-6 in conference) record.
UNC Asheville
The Bulldogs come into this game with a record of 5-12 (1-5 in conference) and sit just above Charleston Southern for ninth in the Big South standings. Their 76-45 home-loss to the conference-leading Gardner-Webb Bulldogs was their fourth in a row. Despite their record, they have won four of their five games inside Kimmel Arena. Asheville is led by Head Coach Honey Brown, who is in her third season. She has a combined record of 25-49 coming into Wednesday's match-up. Her team was expected to finish fifth in the conference in the preseason, and Jordaynia Ivie was named All-Big South Second Team.
Charleston Southern
- The strength of the Bucs this season has been inside. In offensive rebounding, the Bucs are fourth in the conference.
- Defensively, the Bucs are third in the conference with 51 blocks.
- Where the Bucs have struggled this year is shooting. They are ninth in the Big South in field goal percentage, shooting 33.9% from the field and 25.4% from beyond the arc, which is eighth in the conference.
- Since conference play has begun, the Bucs have cut down on the turnovers. As a team, they are averaging 22 per game.
- After winning Big South Freshman of the Week, Catherine Alben followed that up with a 19-point performance against Radford this past Saturday. The Atlanta, G.A. native leads the team averaging 10.6 points per game and is seventh in the Big South with 24 steals on the season.
- Saniya Jones is averaging just under one block per game, which is seventh in the Big South. In 13 games (4 GS), while averaging 9.2 minutes per game, the freshman has 11 blocks and three steals.
- Sha'Mya Leigh is the only player on the team to have started every game this season. She has played all 40 minutes four times, including against Georgia Southern on November 13th, when she scored a career-high 20 points.
- Kennedi Jackson continued her successful 2022-23 campaign. In 17 games (15 GS), she leads the team with 14 blocks (fifth in the Big South) and is second on the team averaging 8.4 ppg.
