Bucs Begin Two-Game Homestand, Starting with Winthrop

CHARLESTON, S.C. -  The Charleston Southern women's basketball team is back at the Buc Dome this week, starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday against the Winthrop Eagles. Both teams are sit at ninth and tenth in the Big South and are looking to snap losing streaks in conference play.

This is expected to be another defensive battle, as both teams are near the bottom in the conference in scoring offense. Charleston Southern is eighth in the conference, averaging 51.82 points per game, while Winthrop is ninth in the conference with 49.75 points per game. Defensively, Winthrop holds the upper hand in points allowed per game. They are third in the Big South only giving up 61.19 points per game; however, the Bucs have gotten better since conference play has begun.

Winthrop
The Eagles come into Wednesday's game looking to snap a four-game losing streak in the conference. Of the past four games that they have played, three of them have come against the top teams in the conference. During the losing streak, they have lost by an average of 22 points per game, including a 20-point loss to Big South-leading Gardner-Webb.

Under the direction of Head Coach Semeka Randall Lay, Winthrop is 3-15 overall (1-6 in conference) and are 0-9 away from home. Randall Lay has been in Rock Hill since the 2019-20 season, when she was hired as Associate Head Coach. Then, she was promoted to interim head coach in the 2020-21 season before taking the interim tag off in April, 2021. Right now, her team is right where they were expected to be entering the 2022-23 season, as they were picked to finish ninth in the Big South in the preseason.
