CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern picked up their second win of Big South play on Saturday afternoon as they hosted and defeated Gardner-Webb 2-0. With the victory, CSU is back in the top four within the conference as they reach the midway point in the schedule.
The teams went back-and-forth in the first half with possession, but the Bucs had an 8-2 shot advantage after the opening 45 minutes. The Buccaneers broke through late in the period in the 40
th minute to give them a 1-0 lead. Clarie Deangelis netted the go-ahead goal off her right foot with
Sam Carlson being the one to cross it in from outside the box.
Gardner-Webb was able to quickly manufacture a pair of solid opportunities late in the final two minutes. The Runnin' Bulldogs' Carina Leal directed a shot to the right of the net that
Jenna Moran was able to turn away to keep the clean sheet. On the ensuing corner, GWU was able to find the back of the net, but had it called back due to goalie interference to keep the4 score at 1-0 heading into halftime.
In the second half, Charleston Southern kept the pressure up and found the back of the net again in the 60
th minute to pull ahead at 2-0.
Elin Persson was the one that scored it as she beat the keeper in a one-on-one off a pass from
Karly Livingston. The Buccaneers held strong defensively the rest of the way to seal the victory.
Moran played all 90 minutes between the posts for the Bucs and collected six saves in the outing.
Charleston Southern returns to action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to face High Point (2-1-2) with a 4:00 p.m. kickoff in a key league matchup.
