CHARLESTON, S.C. – After having the lead for most of the game, the Charleston Southern women's basketball team was defeated by the Charlotte 49ers on Monday by a final score of 65-60.
The Bucs (2-9) had a 10-point lead entering the fourth quarter; however, they were held scoreless until there was 3:44 left to take a 52-51 lead. Until then, the 49ers (7-4) were on an 11-0 run to start the quarter. Charleston Southern tied the game with 1:46 left with a layup by
Jordan Berry. The score remained a one-point game until 33 seconds left, when the 49ers forced a turnover and knocked down two free throws.
Catherine Alben led the way with19 points, including 15 in the first half.
Maya Robinson had nine points, and
Alba Garcia had eight points.
Madison Adamson led the way in the rebound department with seven to go along with her eight points.
Charlotte won in the rebounding department 45-26, including 19 rebounds on the offensive side, which led to 19 second-chance points. It was the Buccaneers who won the turnover battle, as they forced 24 of them on the night.
Charleston Southern shot 7/15 from beyond the arc and were 4/4 in the second quarter and 6/10 overall from beyond the arc in the first half. Garcia had two of those three pointers leading to eight points.
The Bucs were able to get things going in the second quarter, as they outscored the 49ers 30-15 heading into halftime. They went on a 7-0 run capped off by a three pointer from
Keshunti Nichols to make it 25-20 with 4:59 left. After a three pointer from the 49ers made it 34-29 in favor of the Bucs, Charleston Southern finished the half on a 6-0 run to take a 40-29 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Bucs were able to push their lead out to 15 points, as Adamson's three pointer and free throw made it 46-31 with 5:39 left in the third quarter. The Bucs fouled the 49ers 12 times in the fourth quarter, and the 49ers were 23/27 overall from the free throw line. The Bucs were 9/13 from the line.
