CHARLESTON, S.C. -Â Charleston Southern Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Jeff Barber announced Chan Metts has been named the new Head Men's and Women's Golf Coach on Monday evening.
Â
Metts becomes the fourth Charleston Southern head golf coach in program history. He comes to the Buccaneers after coaching stops at the University of Sioux Falls, Georgia Southern University and most recently Western Kentucky University.
Â
"I feel very blessed to have Chan and Whitney Metts join the Buccaneer family," said Barber. "From our very first conversation, it was very clear that he would make an outstanding addition to our department. He is a terrific golf coach with great Division 1 experience, and he is also a strong man of faith that will lead our Men's and Women's teams in this most important way."
Â
Metts comes to the Buccaneers after spending the last five seasons as the head coach at Western Kentucky after taking on the role in 2018. In his first season with the Hilltoppers he helped guide two individuals to NCAA Regional berths in the same season, Billy Tom Sargent and Stuart Easton, marking the first time in program history two individuals qualified in the same season.
Â
"I would like to thank Jeff Barber for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to become a part of the CSU family," stated Metts. "I knew from my first conversation with Jeff that there is something extremely special about this place. My wife and I are beyond excited to get to Charleston. God has blessed us so much with this opportunity, and I can't wait to get to campus and get to work. Go Bucs!"
Â
His time with the Hilltoppers came with many noteworthy moments, including Sargent's performance in the Regionals that led to the first Hilltopper to compete in the NCAA Championships in Metts' first season in charge. Sargent now plays on the Korn Ferry Tour as he joins a handful of players Metts has led to play on Tours around the world.
Â
Before arriving at WKU, Metts spent two seasons as an Assistant Coach at Georgia Southern. In those two seasons, GSU claimed back-to-back runner-up finishes in the Sun Belt Conference as well as clinching a berth in the NCAA Championships in the 2017 campaign. That tenure also saw Stephen Fisk come along, another golfer that is currently on the Korn Ferry Tour.
Â
Metts got his start in the coaching world at Sioux Falls University, serving as the Graduate Assistant for the Cougars for one season with both the Men's and Women's programs. Before jumping into intercollegiate athletics, Metts worked for the Department of Juvenile Justice in Georgia as a juvenile probation officer for seven years. While serving in this position, Metts continued to compete as an amateur throughout Georgia.
Â
A native of Dublin, Georgia, Metts walked on the Georgia College and State University men's golf team in 2005 and earned a scholarship in his senior year. As a junior, Metts played in five tournaments, including a tie for 20th at the conference tournament and seventh at the regional. To add to his top-10 region finish, Metts nearly led the Bobcats to a national tournament appearance, missing a bid by one stroke.
Â
Metts and his wife, Whitney, have been married 14 years.
