Buccaneer Spotlight: Luiza Fullana

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Southern women's tennis team just came off its third-straight Big South Tournament crown and third-straight berth in the NCAA Tournament, and a big piece of that puzzle was 2023 graduating senior Luiza Fullana.

Fullana spent the year a season ago playing at the No. 1 flight in singles, from start to finish on the year, finishing the year with a 14-5 record in that slot. Her 14 wins was also the most in a season for her. Ever. Each of the four years she wore the blue and gold, her win total grew, from three wins her freshman year to a career-high 14 in her last season.

Luiza has been playing tennis since she was 12 years old but says that her college experience at Charleston Southern was what molded her into the player she is today. What caliber of player is she today? At the highest of levels professionally, she is finding success each day.

Fullana has played in four tournaments since graduating from CSU, sharing the court with numerous former top-20 players, including taking a set from Kristina Mladenovic in the Brasilia 80k in a second-round match over the summer. Her national ranking sits at 1028 professionally at this moment, but that has also climbed after each tournament since graduation.

"Coach Anca also taught me that it is important learn how to control what I CAN control, said Fullana. "I believe that I also learned that not every day is going to be a good day, and that we always need to move on from that." Luiza credits most of her growth as a tennis player to her coach Anca Dumitrescu, the Head Coach here at Charleston Southern. She also gives credit to the program here at Charleston Southern, "I am beyond grateful for everything that Coach Anca and the program taught me throughout my 4 years of college, mentioned Fullana. "The girls that were part of the team will always be great friends that I know I can count on, and I already miss playing college tennis."

Fullana had a decorated career her at Charleston Southern, compiling a career record of 33-25 in singles play and collecting three Big South Championships to go along with being an All-Conference First Team selection her last two seasons in singles as well as in doubles her senior year.
