NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Southern women's basketball team picked up their eighth win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating the Winthrop Eagles by a 65-50 score. This is their second win over Winthrop this season.
The Bucs (8-15, 5-5 in conference) used a strong second and fourth quarter to put away the Eagles (10-13, 4-6 in conference) outscoring Winthrop by 20 points in those two periods.
Alba Garcia had 11 points in the second quarter on 75% from the field and was 2/3 from beyond the arc and 3/3 from the free throw line. For just the third time this season, the Bucs shot over 50% from the field, as they shot 51.1%.
Kennedi Jackson led the team with 14 points while
Catherine Alben and Garcia both had 11. Alben and
Madison Adamson tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven. Winthrop had a brief 16-15 lead in the second quarter until
Shimei Muhammad gave the Bucs the lead with a three pointer. After that, the Bucs did not look back, taking a 37-24 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was mostly dominated by the Eagles, who used a 12-4 run to trim the deficit to 41-35 with 3:48 to go in the third quarter. The lead was in single digits until a layup by Jackson practically put it away for the Buccaneers. Then, the lead expanded to 15 late in the game when
Jordan Berry made four free throws down the stretch.

The Bucs have the weekend off but are back in action next Wednesday, Feb. 14 when they go to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on Gardner-Webb for the second time. Charleston Southern won the first matchup scoring a season-high 83 points back on Jan. 10. The game will start at 7 PM.
