Bucs Survive Lancers for Fourth-Straight Victory

Box Score FARMVILLE, VA - The Charleston Southern women's basketball team picked up their fourth win in a row on Saturday, as they escaped a fourth-quarter rally from the Longwood Lancers for a 55-50 road victory.

Charleston Southern (10-12, 6-3 in conference) won the rebounding battle 42-31 and shot a season-best 46.8% from beyond the arc. They were led by Catherine Alben, who scored 19 points and shot 4/7 from the three-point line. Saniya Jones added 12 points and six rebounds, while Madison Adamson led the way with 12 boards. 

The Lancers (16-7, 7-2 in conference) were a force on the defensive end all game long, as they forced a Buccaneer season-high 34 turnovers, including 11 in the first quarter. Although they had success on the defensive side, they were unable to make shots early on, as they made just five field goals in the first quarter, allowing the Bucs to take a 14-10 first-quarter lead.

The Buccaneers found success from the field in the second quarter, as they were 8/11 overall from the field and 1/2 from beyond the arc. They took their first double-digit lead with 7:47 left in the second quarter, when Caelan Ellis knocked down a triple to give the Buccaneers a 21-10 lead. Longwood did not make their first jump shot of the second quarter until a three-pointer with under two minutes left cut their deficit to nine points

Charleston Southern came out firing in the third quarter, leading by as many as 15 points, when Ellis connected on her second three-pointer of the afternoon to go up 42-27 with 1:56 left in the third quarter. 

Longwood clawed back into the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Buccaneers 22-13 in the final quarter. They did not score more than 10 points in a quarter in either of the first three periods. The Lancers were able to trim their deficit to three points with 53 seconds left with a turnover and a layup the other way. Charleston Southern did not shoot their first free throws of the contest until the one-minute mark of the fourth quarter. They were 2/6 on the afternoon. 

The Buccaneers have now won four games in a row during the regular season in Big South play for the first time since 2005. They are back on the road this Wednesday, when look to complete the season sweep against the Winthrop Eagles at 6:00 PM.
