CSU's Comeback Effort Comes Up Short at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Charleston Southern women's basketball team battled back in the fourth quarter, but Winthrop maintained control from start to finish as the Eagles defeated the Buccaneers 63-54 Saturday afternoon inside the Winthrop Coliseum.
 
Tyonna Bailey led Charleston Southern with a game-high 30 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, recording her first career double-double as the Buccaneers stayed within striking distance late. Despite Bailey's career performance, Winthrop's 15 steals and 23 points off turnovers proved decisive.
 
Winthrop opened the game with early momentum, shooting 50 percent in the first quarter to take a 16-11 lead. Charleston Southern struggled to find consistency offensively, hitting just 3-of-10 shots in the opening period. The Eagles continued to control the tempo in the second quarter, matching CSU point-for-point in a 15-15 frame to carry a 31-26 lead into halftime.
 
The third quarter shifted further in Winthrop's favor as Charleston Southern endured a cold shooting stretch, going 4-for-18 from the field and only scoring nine points. Winthrop capitalized by scoring 15 points in the period, extending its lead to 46-35 heading into the fourth. Charleston Southern responded with its best offensive quarter in the final 10 minutes, outscoring Winthrop 19-17. Bailey paced the comeback effort scoring 15 of the team's 19 points as the Buccaneers shot 50 percent in the quarter, but Winthrop remained steady at the free-throw line to close out the 63-54 win.
