Buccaneers Claim Team Championship as Buglass Wins Individual Title to Begin Fall Season

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern claimed the team title at the CSU Buc Open on Friday morning with a team score of 19 points. Freya Buglass secured the individual championship with a time of 17:57.2 in the 5K.

The Buccaneers finished with a team score of 19 points. They defeated College of Charleston who had 41, The Citadel with 85 and South Carolina State with 120 on the morning.

Buglass won the individual title at the race claimed the title at the race, crossing the line 10 seconds ahead of the next closest finisher. Charlize Antia took second at the meet with a time of 18:07.2. Rounding out the scoring five for the squad included Lucy McNamara in fifth with an 18:16.3 and a pair of freshmen in Amron Rice and Sophia Scherwinski with times of 18:15.6 and 18:22.2. Elizabeth Shaylor also had a solid showing with an 18:23.4 for eighth.

In total there were 16 runners from Charleston Southern that competed in the race with nine of them making their Buccaneer debuts. Of this group, there were five that broke 19 minutes at the race including Rice, Scherwinski, Adda Helmers (10^th – 18:34.8), Reese Fauske (15^th – 18:50.5) and Abbee Bolin (18^th –18:54.8)

The Buccaneers will be back in action next weekend as they head to the upstate of South Carolina to compete in the Furman Invitational with the races scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
