2012-13 Big South Conference Regular Season Champions
For Charleston Southern, the 2012-13 season began as one of the most anticipated in school history. It ended as perhaps the best in school history.
Picked to win the Big South’s South Division title, the Bucs accomplished just that and embraced the role of favorite en route to claiming the program’s first regular season conference championship in 26 years. CSU advanced to national postseason play for only the second time ever, earning a spot in the NIT and giving top-seeded Southern Miss all it could handle before a raucous crowd in Hattiesburg.
Led by eighth-year head coach Barclay Radebaugh and the sophomore backcourt duo of Arlon Harper and Saah Nimley, CSU provided its fans countless highlights throughout the season.
Among them was an eight-game winning streak that included a 7-0 start to Big South play, and ranked as the third longest in program history. Within that stretch, the Bucs erased a 12-point deficit to defeat two-time defending Big South champion UNC Asheville in front of a jam-packed Buc Dome. Three days later, CSU out-dueled Big South North champion High Point behind a brilliant 34-point outing from senior guard Jeremy Sexton, who hit 12-of-13 from the floor and matched a single-game program record with eight three-pointers.
CSU continued to make the Buc Dome one of the best – and most unique – home court advantages around, going 11-3 to up its mark at home over the last three seasons to 35-7. The students and local fan base were particularly energized by visits from local rivals The Citadel and College of Charleston, with both bringing standing-room only crowds. The Bucs delighted one of those sellout crowds with one of their best performances of the year, dominating The Citadel, 101-73, for their fourth straight win in the series.
The Bucs saved one of their most complete games of the campaign for an opportune time, throttling Coastal Carolina to clinch the regular season crown on Sexton and Mathiang Muo’s senior day. CSU snapped a seven-game losing streak to the rival Chanticleers in the process, and enjoyed a post-game celebration with the Buc Dome crowd.
