LYNCHBURG, Va. - Charleston Southern traveled to play Liberty in
Big South action Saturday, but couldn't outlast the Flames, falling
60-79. Jamarco Warren, the Big South's leading scorer, put up 24
points to lead the team. However, Seth Curry, who leads the Big
South and the nation in freshman scoring, led all scorers with 27.
With the loss, the Bucs dropped to 5-9 on the year and 1-3 within
the Big South. Liberty improved to 11-6 and evened out at 2-2 in
the conference.
Warren's 24 points came on 8-17 shooting including 6 rebounds
and 4 threes. Omar Carter reached double-figures with 11 points
and 7 rebounds. Giedrius Knysas has settled into his offensive
role, scoring 10 points on 5-7 shooting. For the Flames, Curry led
the cast of four players to reach double-figures. Liberty shot
just under 50 percent from the floor, including an 84 percent
effort from the line.
CSU was on the board first with a Kelvin Martin jumper, but the
Flames responded with an 8-0 run. The Bucs came right back to tie
things up at 12 apiece after a Knysas layup, with 13:11 on the
clock. Liberty controlled the lead for the remainder of the half,
leading by as many as 9 before holding a 35-29 lead heading into
the locker room.
CSU shot 43 percent in the first half, however struggled with a
2-13 mark from three point range. The Bucs out-rebounded the
Flames 21-13 in the first stanza, but suffered from their miscues,
committing 10 turnovers.
CSU came out in the second half, firing on all cylinders, to take a
four point lead after a 10-0 run. During that stretch, Warren had
eight straight points, including two threes, before Knysas capped
off the run with a layup. The game of runs continued, and Liberty
took their turn with an 8-0 run, to follow up CSU. A pair of free
throws from Carter put the Bucs back up one, 48-47, with 13:45 on
the clock.
It was all Flames from that point, as Liberty had a six minute
stretch where they went on an 18-3 run. The Flames led by as many
as 21 before Joel Lamb scored to put the final score at 60-79.
The Bucs did manage to out rebound the Flames for the game by
five. However, CSU ended with 18 turnovers and just 9 assists on
24 field goals.
The conference road stretch continues for the Bucs, as they will
look to bounce back at Radford on Monday in a 7 p.m. contest.
