CHARLESTON, S.C. - Brianna Thompson, Kimberley Koerner and Chanel Bell all recorded singles wins as the Buccaneers topped visiting S.C. State on Saturday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex, 4-3.
The Bucs took the doubles matches on courts 2 and 3 to take the opening point of the afternoon and held off a late S.C. State rally to record their 17th straight home win dating back to the end of the 2013 season. CSU moves to 1-0 overall in the 2016 season.
The Bucs' duo of Valeria Koussenkova/Nicolin Luecke picked up the first CSU win of the afternoon with a 6-0 victory over Marketa Marcanikova/Claudia Roca on court no. 2. Gabriela Srowdowski/Annika Wagner followed shortly afterward with a 6-2 win over Carla Petreanu/Oleksandra Filippova on court no. 3 to clinch the doubles point for CSU. Play was suspended on court no. 1 following the Bucs' clinch.
In singles competition, Thompson topped Filippova 6-1, 6-0 on court no. 2 to give the Bucs the 2-0 lead. CSU's lead reached 3-0 following Koerner's 6-3, 6-3 win over Marcanikova on court no. 4.
The Bulldogs rallied back with wins on courts 3 and 5 as Andejla Vasic topped Srowdowski 7-6, 7-5, and Brown defeated Koussenkova, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Bell put the Bucs over the top on court no. 6 as the senior rallied back after falling in the first set 3-6, to record a 7-6, 6-1 win to clinch the CSU victory.
In the final match on court no. 1, Rassif topped CSU's Luecke in a three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
Charleston Southern is back in action next Sunday at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex as the Bucs host Wofford. First serve in doubles competition is set for 1 p.m.
