CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – On Friday afternoon, Charleston Southern's women's tennis team concluded its 2026 campaign, facing a tough test against the No. 5-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels claimed the doubles point to take an early lead, earning victories on courts two and three. Charleston Southern's top pairing of Marina Skegro and Carlota Farres Carreter was competitive on court one, battling to a 3-3 scoreline against a nationally-ranked UNC duo before the point was decided.
In singles play, UNC secured three straight-set wins to clinch the match. Despite the final result, the Buccaneers showed resilience across several courts. Skegro held her own on court one, winning multiple games in the opening set and sitting tied early in the second set against a top-ranked opponent before play was halted. Brenda Yoris also responded after dropping the first set on court two, leveling her second set at 3-3 when the match was called.
Carle Botha turned in one of the tighter performances of the day, pushing her second set to a 4-4 deadlock on court four after facing a first-set deficit. Those efforts highlighted Charleston Southern's competitiveness against one of the nation's premier programs.
UNC ultimately sealed the contest with wins on courts five, six, and three to advance, but the Buccaneers' appearance in the NCAA Tournament caps a strong season for Charleston Southern. The experience gained competing on the national stage provides a valuable foundation as the program continues to build moving forward.
