Â
The Bucs' (4-22, 2-15 Big South) road trip will continue next week as CSU closes out the travel portion of their schedule on Wednesday, March 4, at High Point University with tipoff set for 7 p.m. inside the Millis Center.
Â
CSU enters the weekend looking to bounce back from a heart-breaker this past Tuesday.  The Buccaneers put together one of their most complete performances of the 2019-20 season at home against Campbell, but were unable to hold off the visiting Camels inside the Buc Dome in the 43-42 loss.
Â
Campbell's Shyanne Tuelle connected on a pair of free throws with 1.3 seconds to help the Camels get over the hump in the key Big South matchup. The Bucs held the lead throughout a majority of the game and CSU held off multiple Campbell scoring runs throughout the second half in a game defined by its defensive intensity.Â
Â
The two teams combined for 36 turnovers and 19 total steals in the second matchup between the Bucs and Camels this season as the lead never reached more than a two-possession game over the final 20:43 of the contest.  CSU's defense stepped up in a big way as the Buccaneers limited Campbell to just 5-of-32 (15.6%) shooting from the three-point line, the lowest average allowed by the Bucs in the 2019-20 season. Campbell's overall 28.1% shooting percentage was the third-lowest opponent field goal percentage surrendered by the Bucs this year.
Â
Sha'Mya Leigh scored all six of her points in the fourth quarter to pace the Bucs over the final 10 minutes of the contest as the freshman guard took charge in keeping the CSU lead intact. Both of her layups in the fourth quarter extended the CSU lead, while her pair of free throws with 14.3 seconds remaining gave the Bucs the 42-41 lead.
Â
Following a pair of Campbell timeouts, the CSU defense was whistled for a foul on the final Camels' possession of the game and sent Tuelle to the free throw line with 1.3 seconds remaining. The Campbell guard converted the first and third attempts to swing the advantage back to the Camels, 43-42, and provided the final scoring margin.
Â
The Bucs have continued to show progress throughout the regular season as the young roster has grown throughout the year. With five freshmen and a transfer gelling together since the conference schedule hit the back-stretch, three of CSU's last four games have been decided by single digits.
Â
CSU will be looking for another strong performance this weekend against a team they nearly upset in the first matchup back on January 18. Hampton utilized a 12-0 run at the end of the third quarter and held off a late Charleston Southern comeback attempt as the Buccaneers fell to the visiting Pirates at home, 64-59.
Â
Trailing 42-40 with 2:42 remaining in the third quarter following a
Carmella Walker jumper, Hampton sparked their 12-point swing with a Makayla Timmons three-pointer on the ensuing Pirates possession. Timmons drilled another three-pointer later in the quarter, while Laren VanArsdale chipped in a late layup to put HU ahead 49-42.
Â
The Bucs trailed 58-50 with 3:43 remaining following a Nylah Young layup, before Walker connected on an open three-pointer from the left corner to cut the gap down to five points.
Asia Smith followed with a pair of free throws before the freshman forward found
Tierra Steede for the open layup to complete the 7-0 run and cut the gap down to 58-57 with 2:26 left on the clock.
Â
Hampton's Dlayla Chakolis and CSU's
Ahlea Myers traded baskets late as the Bucs kept the gap within one point with 40 seconds remaining. VanArsdale drove in for a late layup to stretch the Hampton lead back to three points with 10 ticks remaining. The Bucs had one final opportunity to tie the game up, but
Sharita Godfrey's three-pointer was redirected and Young sealed the game at the line for the Pirates in the Big South matchup.
Â
Hampton (16-10, 12-5 Big South) enters the contest on a four-game winning streak and is battling with Radford for the second overall seed in the Big South Women's Basketball Championship. The Pirates topped Winthrop, Longwood, USC Upstate, and Presbyterian in their last four games with contests against Campbell and Radford still to play in the regular season.
Â
In their last matchup against Presbyterian, VanArsdale scored 18 points, while Young posted 17-point, 12-rebound double-double in the 67-53 victory over the Blue Hose. Ashley Bates added 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and five steals in the double-digit win for PC.
Â
Tierra Steede paces CSU's scoring (9.9) and rebounding (6.8) efforts this season as the senior forward has started all 19 games she's lined up in. She also leads the Bucs with 23 blocked shots, while adding a 40.9% field goal percentage from the floor this season.
Â
Junior guard
Carmella Walker is averaging 9.3 points per game and has made her mark on the defensive side of the ball with 57 steals this season. Sophomore wing
Sharita Godfrey is also among the team leaders with 8.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Â
VanArsdale leads Hampton's scoring efforts this season with 15.7 points per game as the Pirates boast four players averaging double-digits in the scoring column. Bates (13.7), Young (13.1), and Timmons (11.6) are also averaging double-digits, while multiple players fill the stats sheets in the game.
