This Week in Buccaneer Athletics - January 18-24

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern is back in action this week with men's basketball, women's basketball, women's tennis, men's and women's cross country, and men's golf all scheduled to be in action through the weekend.

Men's Basketball vs. USC Upstate – January 19-20
The Buccaneers (1-11, 0-8 Big South) welcome the USC Upstate Spartans (3-11, 3-5 Big South) in a key conference matchup inside the Buccaneer Field House on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. CSU is back home for the final time in the month of January before scheduled trips to Campbell (Jan. 24-25) and High Point (Feb. 4-5).

Phlandrous Fleming (19.3 ppg, 6.1 rpg) continues to pace the CSU offense throughout the season, while freshman Ja'Quavian Florence made his ESPN SportsCenter debut (CLICK HERE) following his highlight dunk during the series against UNC Asheville.

USC Upstate was a on three-game winning streak prior to a COVID shutdown with wins of High Point and Longwood (twice), but the Spartans were swept at home against Hampton this past weekend to fall below .500 in conference play.

CSU is 10-2 all-time against the Spartans dating back to the series opener in the 1966-67 season, but USC Upstate snapped a five-game CSU winning streak with a win last season inside the G.B. Hodges Center.

Women's Basketball vs. Campbell – January 22-23
The Buccaneers (6-6, 4-4 Big South) welcome the Campbell Camels (8-5, 5-3 Big South) to the Buccaneer Field House on Friday and Saturday. The Buccaneers are wrapping up an eight-game home stand that featured home contests against Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb, and UNC Asheville.

Sharita Godfrey (11.4 ppg, 49.0% 3PT) has sparked the CSU offense to connect at a blistering pace this season as the Buccaneers sit second in the Big South in field goal percentage (41.0%), while leading the conference in three-point percentage (38.4%).

Campbell has posted conference sweeps over Winthrop and Presbyterian, while splitting against Longwood on their way to sitting fourth in the Big South standings. The Camels boast the league's best scoring defense (54.5 ppg) and defensive field goal percentage (36.3%) on the season).

CSU is 5-37 all-time against the Camels dating back to the series starting in the 1979-80 season. Four of CSU's five wins in the series have come during the Applin coaching era, including three of them at home inside the Field House.

Women's Tennis vs. Georgia Southern – January 23 – 1 p.m.
Charleston Southern women's tennis makes their 2020-21 season debut this weekend as the Buccaneers are scheduled to host Georgia Southern at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. The match kicks off a five-match home stand that will feature contests against College of Charleston, Columbus State, Georgia State, and Coastal Carolina.

Third-year head coach Anca Dumitrescu returns six student-athletes (Zoe Cauthen, Luiza Fullana, Tyler Kirk, Madalina Man, Tiffany Pyritz and Michelle Schmitz) from last season's squad that started 1-0 in Big South play while adding highly-ranked freshman Khyanna Singh to the mix in pursuit of a Big South Championship.

Georgia Southern is also making their season debut this weekend with the Eagles scheduled to make trips to CSU, College of Charleston, and South Carolina State to open the year.

Men's and Women's Cross Country hosts Charleston Southern Invitational – January 23 – 2 p.m.
Charleston Southern will be hosting their season-opening CSU Invitational this weekend as the Buccaneers host a women's 5K and a men's 8K on their home course on the campus of Charleston Southern University.

The women's cross country event will start at 2 p.m., while the men's is scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m.

The men's squad finished second in the 2019 Big South Championships and followed with a top-20 performance at the NCAA Southeast Regionals while the women placed third in the Big South Championships meet and placed among the top-25 o the NCAA Southeast Regional.

The Bucs return 14 from the 2019 men's roster and add five freshmen, while the women return eight and welcome two freshmen.

Men's Golf at Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate – January 24-26
Charleston Southern's men's golf team will traveling back to the Oak Point Golf Course this upcoming weekend for a three-day event on Kiawah Island. The Bucs will take on the to-be-named field at this inaugural event for their second action of the season after taking on Liberty this past weekend in a One-Day Match.

The Bucs and Flames lined up in two separate nine-hole events with eight golfers competing in matches throughout the day. Liberty led 4.5-3.5 through the first nine holes, while CSU rallied back over the back nine with the 4.5-3.5 win to even the score at 8-8 through 18 holes.

In the tiebreaker, a four-ball match score was kept in each foursome. CSU won the four-ball match in the grouping featuring Colin Trahan and Keegan Vaugh, but the Flames captured the wins in the other three matchups in taking the 11-9 decision.

The Bucs continue the season on February 22-23 at the Pinnacle Bank Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
