CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern is back in action this week with women's golf, track and field, women's basketball, men's basketball, and women's tennis all scheduled to be in action through the weekend.
Women's Golf at Battle at Old South (Jan. 29-31)
Charleston Southern's women's golf team opens up the 2021 spring season at the Battle at Old South held at the Old South Golf Links in Bluffton, S.C. The three-day event is hosted by the University of Cincinnati and is the first of five regular season events prior to the 2021 Big South Conference Championships.
The Bucs' roster features a balance of veteran leadership and talented newcomers as they prepare for the upcoming season. Senior Daniela Intriago brings the most experience to the team on the course, while juniors Nicole Stewart, Kathryn Thorne, and Sarah Hameed all held consistent spots in head coach
Jordan Jeffers' lineup last season.
A trio of newcomers are all expected to make their mark on the lineup this season with freshmen Madison Frank and Caroline Engelbredt, and junior Isabell Friberg all making their CSU debuts throughout the 2021 season.
Track & Field at Bob Pollock Invitational (Jan. 29-30)
Charleston Southern's men's and women's track and field teams start the 2021 indoor season this weekend at the Bob Pollock Invitational held at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex. The meet opens the shortened CSU indoor schedule as the Big South Conference announced it will not host the conference's indoor championship meet this spring.
CSU finished fourth overall in both the men's and women's standings at the 2020 Big South Indoor Championships last season. New faces are expected to shine for Director of Track & Field/Cross Country
Jim Stintzi and Head Coach
Soyini Thompson in this season-opening event for the Buccaneers. Â Â
Women's Basketball at Winthrop (Jan. 29-30)
Charleston Southern women's basketball is back on the road for the first time since December 22 as the Buccaneers make the trek to Rock Hill, S.C. and Winthrop University. The Bucs wrapped up an eight-game home stand this past weekend against Campbell prior to heading out to the Winthrop Coliseum to continue conference play.
The Bucs (6-8, 4-6 Big South) enter the week seventh in the Big South standings with a month left in 2020-21 regular season. CSU still has home competitions against High Point (Feb. 5-6), while traveling to Longwood (Feb. 12-13) and USC Upstate (Feb. 26-27). The Bucs also need to make up their contest against Radford that was postponed in early January due to COVID-19.
CSU continues to lead the Big South in three-point percentage (35.7%) and second in field goal percentage (40.7%) on the season, while junior guard Sharita Godfrey paces the conference from behind the arc (47.3%). Three Bucs sit among the top-21 scorers in the conference with Carmella Walker (10.8), Godfrey (10.8), and Alyssia Faye (10.2) all among the scoring leaders in the Big South.
Winthrop (3-10, 2-8 Big South) currently sits 11th in the conference standings with eight games still to play on the year. The Eagles picked up conference wins over USC Upstate and Hampton and boast one of the conference's most complete rebounding units sitting second in the Big South in rebounding offense (40.1) and rebounding defense (35.0), while pacing the conference in rebounding margin (+5.1)
Men's Basketball at High Point (Jan. 29-30)
The Buccaneers' men's basketball team continues its road swing this upcoming weekend as Charleston Southern travels to the Millis Center for a two-game swing against High Point. The Bucs have struggled in conference play throughout the season, but are in the midst of their second game against Gardner-Webb at the time of this writing.
The Bucs (1-12, 0-9 Big South) are still scheduled to host USC Upstate and Longwood this season, while traveling to Presbyterian. The Bucs' contest against the Spartans is due to be made up following COVID concerns that forced the postponement of the series earlier this fall.
CSU continues to be led by senior guard Phlandrous Fleming Jr. as the preseason conference Player of the Year sits second in the Big South in scoring (20.6), sixth in rebounding (6.2), sixth in field goal percentage (42.0%), and first in free throw percentage (82.6%). Fleming also sits among the conference leaders in all three-point categories, as well as steals as the Athens, Ga. native continues to showcase his ability to be one of the best overall talents in the conference this season.
High Point (4-8, 2-5 Big South) has picked up Big South wins over USC Upstate and Presbyterian so far in the 2020-21 season. John-Michael Wright sits third in the conference's scoring standings with 19.9 points per game and fifth in field goal percentage at 44.1%. CSU swept the season series against the Panthers last season.
Women's Tennis vs. College of Charleston (Jan. 29), vs. Columbus State (Jan. 30)
The Charleston Southern women's tennis team will look to build off their season-opening win over Georgia Southern as the Buccaneers host College of Charleston and Columbus State this weekend. The Bucs are scheduled to open up the 2021 spring season with five consecutive home matches, including back-to-back competitions against Coastal Carolina (Feb. 12) and Georgia State (Feb. 13), before traveling to Davidson at the end of the month.
The Bucs (1-0) are riding the wave from their season-opening win over the Eagles thanks to a stand-out performance from freshman Khyanna Singh. The Queens Village, N.Y. native combined with Madalina Man for the clinching point in doubles play, while adding a clutch three-set win on court no. 4 to secure the Bucs' 4-3 win.
Madalina Man and Zoe Cauthen also picked up their first singles wins of the season, while Luiza Fullana and Michelle Schmitz combined for a doubles win on court no. 3.
CofC has fallen in both of their matches to start the 2021 spring season with losses to Clemson and Georgia Southern. Columbus State's contest at CSU marks the start of the regular season for the Cougars.
