CHARLESTON, S.C. – Skylar Yates and
Indigo Young both had three kills in the decisive fifth set to lead Charleston Southern to a 3-2 win over The Citadel on Tuesday at McAlister Field House.
The teams split the first four sets before the Bucs (5-6) came away with the 25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-8 victory. Yates finished with 17 kills and 17 digs, and
Giada Pais-Marden also had a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs.
Indigo Young and
Peyton Thompson led CSU with 18 kills each with Young committing only one attack error en route to a .739 hitting percentage for the night. Yates was also dominating at the net, hitting at a .455 clip, and the Bucs finished at .288 as a team.
Young completed her box score stuffing with two solo blocks and three block assists.
Emilee Karelse had 47 assists and 17 digs, and
Angelika Rusin had a team-high 21 digs.
The opening set was tied at 17 when CSU ran off six straight points starting with a kill and service ace by Thompson. Pais-Marden put the finishing touches with an ace to put the Bucs up, 1-0.
The Citadel evened the match in set two, but CSU when three straight Bulldog attack errors and another Pais-Marden ace highlighted a 4-0 run that made it 19-14. The Bucs weren't threatened the rest of the way in taking a 2-1 lead.
After the Bulldogs tied it again, the Bucs responded by controlling the final set in upping their lead in the all-time series with The Citadel to 22-8.
The Bucs are back in action on Friday and Saturday when they host the Chucktown Throwdown at the Buccaneer Field House. CSU faces College of Charleston on Friday at 7 p.m. and the following day takes on Montana at 10 a.m. and UNCG at 5 p.m.
