CHARLESTON, S.C. - After a 2-3 weekend in Jacksonville, FL this past weekend, the Charleston Southern softball team is back at CSU Softball Complex for a mid-week, non-conference doubleheader with the UNC Greensboro Spartans. This will be the first time that these two teams face off since 2013.
The Spartans (12-7) are riding a three-game winning streak into Wednesday's matchup, having swept a series against the Elon Phoenix this past weekend. After winning the SOCON last year UNC Greensboro has high expectations for this year as well, as they were picked to finish second in the conference this year by the Coaches Poll.Â
Three players that returned for the 2023 season were named to first-team All-Conference; including fifth year Delaney Cumbie, who was just named SOCON Player of the Week. Senior Maycin Brown and sophomore Grace Loftin were also named to the All-Conference Team.Â
Janelle Breneman is the all-time leader in wins at UNC Greensboro with a career record of 296-177. In six of her 10 seasons as Head Coach in Greensboro, N.C. she has eclipsed the 30-win mark. That includes a COVID-shortened 2020 season, where they were on pace for more than 30 wins.Â
Charleston Southern (8-8) is coming off of a weekend in Jacksonville, FL in which they went 2-3, winning on Friday against North Florida as well as Sunday against Jacksonville. In those five games, the Bucs managed to score over three runs just one time.
As a team this season, they are hitting just .192. They are led by
Ashley Meckley, who is hitting .277 as well as
Harper Schoeneweis, who is right behind her with a .275 batting average and a team-leading nine walks.Â
On the mound,
Annah Junge has been a work horse. In 10 appearances (8 GS), she owns a 7-1 record with a 2.31 ERA and has already won Big South Pitcher of the Week once this year.Â
The Bucs are just 2-19-1 against the Spartans in their history and are currently riding a four-game losing streak in the series. They are looking for their first win against the UNC Greensboro since 2000, when they won 3-2 in nine innings.
